We had a wonderful 10 day stay at Casa das Hortensias. The kitchen was fully equipped and the washing machine and outdoor space to hang out laundry provided everything we needed. We appreciated that supplies like olive oil, vinegar, a few spices, laundry soap, dishwasher soap, toilet paper and paper towels were provided. Spectacular hiking trails started steps from the house, and the views to the beach and ocean were beautiful. The living area and bedrooms were comfortable. Jose, our host, was responsive to any questions we had and the information binder was helpful. Thank you again for a lovely stay.

There is so much to do within walking distance from this house. The beach! Enchanting hiking trails! And two good restaurants. Again all walkable from the house. Plus this is a great place to start a visit to other places in the island.

This was an amazing rental. The house is quite large with 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs and a large living are on the main level. It was very well equipped for dining in and everything was in working order. There is a beautiful large terrace facing the ocean where you can also relax and eat. The beach is only a 2 minute walk and the host even provided beach towels. The location is good but expect to do some traveling to the popular sight seeing areas. The island is small enough though to get around easily. We loved our stay at this beautiful home.

The house is in a fantastic location. We made day trips in all directions. We really loved this spot, however. We loved hiking the local trails, watching people working in their fields, walking down to the beach. Two of us went in swimming. The only problem we had was the third bed in the middle room turnedout to be a trundle bed and would br suitable for a child, not a senior citizen One of us slept on the long sofa with bedding Jose provided. That was fine.We ate and relaxed on the patio, wondering at the cows high above us in the steep meadows. We are all ready to come back soon.

This was one of the best homes we have stayed in. It lived up to every expectation. Very well provisioned…. down to coffee and espresso ready to enjoy. All the manuals for the appliances, and great suggestions for nearby restaurants and grocery shopping. Loved our morning views as we enjoyed brunch on the patio….. beds were comfy and two showers were a plus in getting ready for our family event.

Beautiful Place

We had the most amazing vacation in Sao Miguel. The hydrangeas were in full bloom during our stay and were absolutely stunning throughout the entire island. The house was so welcoming, comfortable and clean. Jose was very responsive to our requests and questions. The house had the most stunning views of the ocean, fully equipped with everything you will need, and is located within walking distance to the beach. It’s centrally located to visit every aspect of the island. We definitely recommend staying here!

Peaceful Paridise

This property was everything as described in the VRBO ad and more. Location was quiet yet close to everything we needed and everything we wanted to see. The beach was spectacular, warm water and lots of space to spread out and enjoy the sunshine. Would definitely recommend this location and would stay here on our next trip to the Azores.

Magical Spot

Casa das Hortensias is a wonderful and comfortable house located in a charming town, surrounded by beautiful Azores countryside. The two outside decks overlook a beautiful vista and black sand beach which is a 5 minute walk from the house. Hiking trails complete with waterfall is very close and accessible.

Exactly what we were hoping for

The house was clean, had all the necessary amenities, José was always quick in his communication, and the location is fairly central on the island (but tucked away in cute Porto Formoso, so it was more low-key and quiet… minus all our rooster neighbors). We loved our stay!

Visiting Porto Formoso

We very much enjoyed our stay at Casa das Hortencias! Although our time there was wet and windy, we found lots to do. From hiking to shopping, to exploring or spending quiet time indoors, we all found entertainment. The house was well supplied with kitchen equipment and we made good use of it all. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms worked as they should. In total, a very good experience.

Breathtaking Island

Our group of 5 adults had a wonderful week at House of Hydrangeas, a very comfortable home with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was so relaxing hearing the surf and the waterfall. The house was in the perfect central location for day trips to explore all parts of the island. Parking spaces were available right in front of the house.The house had everything you needed to cook meals and was also very near to excellent restaurants. Self check in/check out was very convenient and Jose was easy to reach. It was exciting to see the hydrangeas at the house in full bloom in late September!

Perfect Place

Such and amazing home and the location and views were better than we could have imagined. The hosts provided everything we could have needed and the tea and treats they left for us upon arrival were a lovely surprise. Perfect location to easily get to Furnas and Ribeira Grande. Beach cafe and restaurant within walking distance served delicious food. If we ever return we would stay here again!

Sao Miguel holiday

Had a wonderful time at José's property. It was exactly as advertised. Quiet area, beautiful views, and your own personal waterfall. Beach just a few minutes walk, and centrally located to the entire island. Having a washing machine came in handy, and the outdoor shower was perfect. Parking on the steep hill with a stick shift can be a little bit exciting but outside of that everything was a breeze. Would definitely stay again.

A great stay in a perfect location...

Jose was a wonderful host who was very responsive and helpful when we had a small crisis (not with the property). The location was perfect for us -- centrally located on the island, allowing for easy day trips in any direction. Both restaurants within walking distance were very good, and the village of Moinhos itself was picturesque, and one of our favorite places of the entire trip. The property was great, having everything we needed. We would not hesitate to book here again -- one of our very best VRBO experiences.

Beautiful home and view

The property was very clean, cozy and exactly as advertised. Jose was very responsive to all emails and flexible with our checkin/checkout times. The house is walking distance to 3 restaurants. We enjoyed two meals at Joseph's beach bar/restaurant Praia Moinhos. It is literally steps from the house and located on the beach. Our weather was rough but, Jose has a fireplace and everything we needed to build a cozy fire and play cards with our grandsons. I would love to stay here again during the Summer months and enjoy all of the decks of the house and more time of the beautiful beach.

50th Anniversary in the Azores

We picked this rental from the pictures of its locale, the pictures and description of the rental itself and the previous renter reviews. We were not disappointed. The home was very clean, comfortably furnished, completely equipped and ideally located. The ocean view from the first floor and second floor terraces was breathtaking. We were about five minutes walk from a large sandy beach with terrific wave and surf activity. The soothing sound of the surf was audible all day and night. Hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty were walking distance away and provided spectacular hillside and ocean views. Our host was most hospitable. This was our first overseas rental and our host's warm and pleasant manner, his attention to our needs and the ease of contact with him added to a wonderful vacation experience.

Wonderful stay at House of Hydrangeas

Our family spent 2 weeks at this lovely house. Its exactly as described on VCBO. Lots of room for 6 people, and the views.... incredible. José was easily available online for any questions. Two restaurants within a 5 minite walk. One beach food, the other fine dining. Bring your hiking shoes. Would definitely stay again.

Perfect Family Getaway

José was so helpful and responsive to all my questions before and after making our reservation. The property was even more beautiful in person! Our family had 4 adults and 3 kids, and the space and location were perfect for us. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and the beach was a short walk away. We spent a lot of time at the beach (Praia dos Moinhos). Having an outdoor shower, clothesline, and washer just inside the property was very convenient. Other visitors had left body boards that our kids (ages 6, 8, and 11) had fun using. José’s local restaurant recommendations did not disappoint. Definitely check out Maré Cheia for the best seafood and hospitality. We also went to Ribeira Grande to get some food at the supermarket, check out town life on a Sunday (so many musical and dance performances, horse rides for kids), and we got the best red velvet cake for my daughter’s birthday at A Merenda. José’s property was convenient to drive from to explore other areas like Lagoa do Fogo, Furnas (Poca da Dona Beija was our favorite thermal pools), hiking in Sete Cidades, and whale watching from Ponta Delgada. José was quick to answer any questions during our stay. We would love to return because week on Sao Miguel just flew by!
