Surrounded by ramparts, the walled city of Saint-Malo was admirably rebuilt identically after its destruction of 80% in August 1944. The city of Saint-Malo, with its ramparts, its castle and its beautiful buildings, is a superb ensemble. The walk along the ramparts offers splendid views of the sea, the sandy beaches at the foot of the ramparts, the National Fort, the port and the buildings of the city. To learn about the history of Saint-Malo, head to the large castle keep which houses the museum of history of the city and the Malouin country. Visitors can also visit the Grand Aquarium of Saint-Malo, a space entirely dedicated to the marine world.
Every four years, the city of Saint-Malo hosts the start of the Route du Rhum, a famous solo transatlantic sailing race that links Saint-Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe.
