We had a bizarre experience at the Hotel Majestad. We appeared to be the only guests in the hotel. Only one hotel staffer was on duty the entire time--she spoke no English and had limited patience for my boyfriend's limited Spanish. Despite the hotel being empty, we were brought to a room that had a king size bed, but was so small the bathroom door had clearly been shaved down to avoiding hitting the bed--very much not the "suite" we'd paid extra for. There was no breakfast buffet, but the lone staffer did present us with a light breakfast of her chosing. We asked if we could check our bags for the day and she informed us that no one would be working at the hotel from noon to 4pm, so they couldn't store our bags.
Gorgeous, historic building... Absolutely bizarre stay.
The Hotel (Mansion} had belonged to a former coffee family early in the 1900s and is located in Old Town San Jose. The highly update Mansion had atmosphere and character for the period. The area is in transition with many of the mansions in the area being renovated. Karla, our host, was the most helpful and personal staff member we have ever met. She made us feel at home the moment we arrived until we left for the airport 6 days later. The location was totally walkable although buses ran everywhere, or Uber was an easy text away.
