Initial impression was that the photographs in the listing made the property appear much brighter than it actually was.Our hosts were very helpful, in particular driving for over an hour to rescue us after we’d had a blowout on our hire car.

Wonderful Stay

We had a terrific stay at Ken and Shona's rental. The house was full of character, very comfortable with a fully equipped kitchen in a quiet and scenic neighbourhood. As cyclists, it was a great spot to launch a bike ride from with countless quiet backroads that were picturesque beyond belief. The house was close to all amenities and it was easy to busier roads/highways to travel to other towns and cities such as Pau, Bayonne etc. The pet donkeys were a special treat and we looked forward to seeing them in the mornings while drinking our coffee in the backyard. Shona and Ken were incredibly helpful and responsive to any questions we had. We would highly recommend this house!

Donkeys vineyards and country serenity

We are a party of five adults who all found Molly Raffa and Maximus (the resident donkeys) an absolute delight. The hosts were very hospitable but not intrusive. The area was central to restaurants wineries and supermarkets

Peaceful base

This property is in a quiet village conveniently located to all of your basic needs. Ken was friendly and directed to us tp fun local activities and restaurants. This property was easy to book and we received quick responses to our inquiries. I highly recommend staying here if you are in the area.

Ken and Shona are wonderful hosts

Ken and Shona welcome was awesome, very responsive, immediately addressed the Internet access issue after the storm strike and any other request we made (not too many I hope). Ideally located between mountains and sea. Spacious enough for the 6 of us and the wood was readied for the barbecue!!! Thank you for everything.

Fantastic cottage in the heart of French countryside!

Beautifully updated and lovingly maintained cottage for a perfect experience of rural France. Very close to two major towns (Pau and Bayonne) as well as multiple charming villages, it makes for an ideal location for exploring the foothills of Pyrénées. The owners, Shona and Ken, are very friendly and accommodating people, truly interested in the comfort of their guests. We strongly recommend the gîte, and hope to return there again soon.

Donkeys and chickens

A quiet village on the outskirts of Navarrenx provided us with everything we needed for our week's holiday. Extremely gracious hosts, and lovely to be able to feed the chickens and donkeys. Will certainly use again if we are in the area.

Fantastic Hosts

Shona & Ken are fantastic hosts. They are very welcoming and have lots of great suggestions for places to visit. The house is close to shops, restaurants, the snow and Spain.

Nice spacious gite near historic town and swimming river

The gite is spacious, well-eqipped and has comfortable beds and pillows (often not the case in gites)... Ken and Shona were very helpful and friendly, and gave us a number of useful tips on things to do and see in the area. The coast is around an hour away, as is canyoning in the Pyrenees. We found it a useful base to make excursions from, on the days we weren't hanging out at one of the many river swimming spots. Good value for money.

Fantastic holiday in a fantastic place

We spent a fab 3 weeks in Susmiou - Ken and Shona were great hosts and couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating. We were traveling with a 2 year old and a 3 month old and they very kindly provided lots of books and toys and even a paddling pool for the garden! We specifically chose this spot due to its location - easily walkable to the small town of Navarrenx which has an outdoor pool and twice weekly market. Lots to do and see in the surrounding area and the time flew by too quickly. We loved the house - loads of character and nice and cool even when it was very hot outside. The donkeys in the field behind us were a big hit with our toddler too. Lots of space in the house and the enclosed garden was a massive plus with small children. Would highly recommend this to anyone and big thanks again to Ken, Shona and family - we'll hopefully be back!

A perfect spot to explore SW France

My husband and I just spent two great weeks at Shona and Ken’s gîte. The location was perfect for exploring the whole region, from the Pyrénées to the coast. They were wonderful hosts, very friendly, there to greet us and farewell us and several times in between to chat, but never intruding. On a fine day, when we asked about hanging out washing Ken installed a new clothes line, and when we asked about movies Shona brought us a giant bag of DVDs. (The television is only French) The house is very well-equipped, the heating is very efficient, both electrical and wood-fired and the internet fast. While the house worked very well for the two of us, being an ancient restored farmhouse, it is charmingly wonky and creaky and could be noisy with a large group. We had some cold, wet weather so a dryer would have helped, but we were able to hang clothes on racks inside. While there are no shops in the village, there is a good supermarket on the main road almost at the end of the street within walking distance. We followed our hosts’ recommendations and had some wonderful meals out, both nearby and on the coast. It’s a great place to stay for anyone who wants to spend time in this beautiful part of France.

Great house in a perfect location!

We had a wonderful weeks stay in this lovely village. The house was very clean, comfortable,spacious and well equipped for all our needs. It is a perfect base for exploring the Pyrenees Atlantiques region. It was great to meet Ken and Shona and their delightful children who were always on hand to give helpful advice.We really enjoyed meeting their extended family "The three Donkeys" and their dog!! All so cute!!

Five of us had a lovely stay here, house roomy, clean and well furnished for a group or a couple. Very French

We had a great 2 weeks in this lovely French house. It was in a quiet village but within walking distance of supermarket and boulongerie, also lovely walk into Navarantz which we did often. We had meals in Navarantz and enjoyed the local producers night, check out if it is on when you visit. My family went for a swim in the nearby river, there are many activities you can try canoeing,rafting and swimming in the pool. We visited many places while there and the train up the mountain was a highlight for us. As the Tour de France came to Pau while we were ther my husband, son in law and grandson went to see the cyclists. Ken and Shona are very friendly and nothing is too much bother for them but you can have your privacy also. We would certainly return to this cottage the Ken has lovingly restored.

Quiet country retreat

This was the perfect getaway to both relax and explore the wine region of Bearn. Our hosts could not have been nicer or more helpful. They provided us with excellent recommendations for both touring and dining. The home is very comfortable and cozy and we could not have been more pleased.
