Tairua Tree House - a traditional bach overlooking the Tairua Harbour

Perched among the treetops with sweeping views across Tairua Harbour, Pauanui, and out to the sea toward the Shoe and Slipper Islands, our classic Kiwi bach offers a peaceful escape surrounded by nature.

In New Zealand, a “bach” (pronounced batch) is a much-loved holiday home — relaxed, welcoming, and made for slowing down. Ours captures that spirit perfectly. Wake to morning sun pouring through the windows and the songs of tui and bellbirds in the trees. As evening settles in, listen for the call of the morepork and, if you’re lucky, the distinctive sound of kiwi nearby.

Comfortable, casual, sunny, and fully furnished, this is a true Kiwi bach experience — relaxed, slightly quirky, and full of character. If you’re looking for polished five-star motel accommodation, this probably isn’t the place for you. But if you enjoy the charm of a modest holiday home with personality, beautiful views, and a peaceful setting, you’ll likely feel right at home here. The photos give a fair and accurate impression of the property, and we encourage guests to book with that in mind.

The bach has two bedrooms, including a mezzanine sleeping area and a bunk room accessed through a “secret door” that children absolutely love. Larger adults may find the doorway a bit of a squeeze — halflings will have no trouble at all.

Tairua is one of the Coromandel’s great holiday spots, offering the best of both harbour and ocean beaches. Swim in the calm harbour waters or head to the surf beach across the estuary. Hire a kayak and explore the harbour and mangroves, fish from the beach or harbour, or book a local fishing charter. There are lovely bush walks nearby, with kauri groves, old mining sites, and caves to discover — maps and local information are available at the bach.

The location is ideal for exploring the wider Coromandel, with easy day trips to famous spots such as Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, and Sailors Grave. A regular ferry service also runs across the harbour to Pauanui.

Tairua township has plenty of cafés, a few restaurants, a supermarket, chemist, hardware store, and visitors are welcome at the local golf course — all just a short walk or drive away.

We do have internet (unlimited), but no TV. This is your opportunity to switch off from television and enjoy an old-fashioned Kiwi holiday. Puzzles and games are provided for relaxed evenings after a day exploring the Coromandel.

Special Conditions
Please bring your own bed linen and towels. Heating is provided by a heat pump in the living area and main bedroom, plus an additional heater in the second bedroom. The fireplace is currently out of service and must not be used.

Families are welcome, however please note the property does not meet modern child-safety compliance standards. There is no banister on the internal stairs, the deck railing is lower than current standards, and the mezzanine balustrade is not officially childproof. These features are visible in the photos and form part of the bach’s original character.

That said, our own children grew up loving the place — especially the secret passageway to the bunk room.

Private and tranquil, yet conveniently located just a 10-minute walk from town — or only a couple of minutes by car — it’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the Coromandel.
