Hale Mauka - Family-friendly 3BD/2BA House With Modern Furnishings

Welcome to Hale Mauka, our "home in the mountains". Our three bedroom, two bath house is truly our second home in Tahoe Donner. We are proud to be able to share it with you throughout the year.

Hale Mauka can comfortably sleep eight guests. A downstairs master suite with a 42in TV is down the hall from the full kitchen. Upstairs, the 'kid's room' contains two sets of bunk beds and a pair of fat boy bean bag stools for lounging. The other upstairs room has a 42in TV and queen bed. A full living room and dining room combine to give lots of room for families to stretch out and relax after a full day enjoying the Tahoe surroundings. There is a wood stove in the living room that can heat the entire home; baseboard heaters and humidifiers are also in each room to further control the temperature.

Don't want to totally unplug while you're away? No worries -- high speed internet is included along with free WiFi for guests. Three LCD Smart TVs (55in in the living room, 42in in two bedrooms) have built-in Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime connections so you can stream videos to your heart's content. The living room TV also includes an HD cable feed so you can watch the major sports games in real time. A Mac Mini is in the loft along with an Airprint-capable printer, so you can surf the web or even get some work done if needed.

Located on Alder Creek Road, it is one of the first thoroughfares in Tahoe Donner to get plowed, providing clear access to your snow sport destinations. The Tahoe Donner Downhill ski area is 5 minutes away, as is the Alder Creek Adventure (Cross Country/Equestrian) Center. An easy jaunt down 89 takes you to Northstar, Squaw and other Tahoe destinations.

Great views of Alder Creek can be seen from the front deck. The rear deck leads to a wonderful backyard play area where kids can go downhill with the provided sleds or just roll around in the snow. You can even play horseshoes in the horseshoe pitch in the front yard.

The kitchen is fully equipped with cookware, utensils, and dinnerware. There is also a full size washer and dryer so you can pack lightly.

High thread-count sheets, down comforters and memory foam mattresses on all beds, along with soft towels ensure that you can relax in luxury after a full day of fun.

Tahoe Donner Private Amenity Access - Important Info for Our Guests
Our home is located in Tahoe Donner, and as a short-term tenant, you have access to Tahoe Donner’s public amenities (Downhill Ski Resort, Cross Country Ski Center, Snowplay, Golf Course, Bikeworks, Equestrian Center and all restaurants) during your stay. Access to Tahoe Donner’s private amenities (Beach Club Marina, Trout Creek Recreation Center, Northwoods Pool, and the Tennis + Pickleball Center) requires a valid Short-Term Tenant Card and Daily Access Fees at the time of entry. This property includes six (6) cards for use during your stay.

One Short-Term Tenant Card is required per person, ages 3+ (per day).
Short-term tenants with valid Short-Term Tenant Cards are required to pay Daily Access Fees to access private amenities.
Blackout dates apply during select peak/holiday periods for private amenities, at which time Short-Term Tenant Cards are not eligible for private amenity access (not applicable to public amenities). The 2026 blackout dates include:

Check-out instructions

The host requires you complete the following before checking out:
Load and start the dishwasher
Strip any used beds, gather used towels, and store extra beds
Remove personal items, remove leftover food and drinks, and take out the trash
Turn off the lights and lock the doors
Put all recycling in blue bags and all trash in white bags. Take trash and recycling out to the bear box and return the bear box key to the small drawer next to the fridge.
Disconnect the propane tank. Refill the tank at Mountain Hardware (Donner Pass Rd and 89S) to the level at your arrival. Place the tank inside the house in the corner next to the sliding glass door.
Ensure that the Tahoe Donner guest passes are hanging from the key hooks in the kitchen by the front door
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.

We had an really excellent stay. The house was clean, warm, comfortable for two families (each with two kids), and affordable. The location was very convenient for us, the kids loved sledding in the backyard every day. It was a wonderful home base for a great long weekend. Having the FireTV app on my iPhone helped a lot with managing the television.

Our host was kind and responsive. We had some issues with tech but were able to get it resolved. The amenities were ok, but had anticipated common items like shower soap and sponges and trash bags to be available. I think refreshing and updating their guest binder and directions for checking in would go a long way to make for a smoother stay for future guests.Otherwise, it was cozy, and plenty of space for all our guests. We had a good time!

Hale Mauka is as wonderful for a families as all the reviews suggest. With three teenage sons between our two families, my brother's and my family had a memorable Christmas with several feet of snow, lots of good food that was easy to prepare in the well-equipped kitchen, and many hours of board games played on the nice big dining room table. Ed and Bernadette were kind and responsive hosts. I also appreciated the details that made it all work well - ample soft towels, lots of lanterns and a wood burning stove to make it through the power outage comfortably in the big snow storm, a great house layout for two families with room for separate and together time.

Great Stay In Donner

My wife and 2 kids (3 and 2) had a great time at this location. Did a little sledding in the backyard, skiing at Donner ski hill (couple minute drive), sledding at the main sled hill on Northwoods and went to some good restaurants in the area. The location was perfect for our little getaway.

A Perfect Trip to the Snow!

This is our second year coming to Hale Mauka for a winter trip and both times have been wonderful! The cabin is cozy, the backyard is a sledder’s dream, and Ed and Bernadette are helpful and caring hosts. Five stars!!

Perfect Mountain Home

This was the perfect place to stay with my young children and inlaws. The downstairs bed/bath gave the inlaws some space and privacy (and us some distance from snoring ;P) while the upstairs bunkroom and 2nd bedroom/bathroom was ideal for us and the kids. The common living/dining area was cozy and the backyard was great for sledding with little kids. Also the property is close to many ski options, and the property as a whole was very clean and well maintained. We would definitely stay again!

Great Stay

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at this property. The house was extremely clean. We all slept well. It’s very close to Sugarbowl where we have passes. Easy access to Safeway too. If you want take-out, not many places deliver so be prepared to pick up or just enjoy dinner out.Great communication with property owner and plenty of dry wood and kindling for the fireplace.Just two items to note: Alder Creek is a busy street and not appropriate to walk on. We enjoy walks in the neighborhood and to hiking trails. Not recommended here. Better to drive. Also, during the winter, there can be a lot of ice on the stairs leading to the house from the garage. Proceed with caution, especially when you are carrying something like wood from the garage to the house. All in all a great stay! We definitely recommend this home for families.

Excellent Location

We stayed for one week over the New Years and had a wonderful time. The home is in a prime location for snow play. My kids had a wonderful time playing in the snow and sledding everyday. The home is well stocked with everything we needed. Ed communicated with us before and during our stay. I would not hesitate to book this home again for our next trip to Truckee.

Western States Base Camp

We used Hale Mauka as our base residence for the Western States 100, and it worked out perfectly. It was an easy commute to Palisades (Olympic Village) for pre-race events and to race start. Truckee was right down the hill and had everything we needed. The residence was comfortable and clean and exactly what the pictures showed and was described. Had everything needed to serve large meals if so inclined to do so. The locals (bear, deer, racoons, and coyotes) wandered by to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Hale Mauka really made our experience in the Tahoe area so relaxing and carefree.

Perfect for our family getaway to Tahoe Donner

Our family of six: two grandparents two parents and two young kids could not have found a better place to enjoy our four-day weekend at Tahoe Donner. It was clean, comfortable, and at all the necessities we could’ve asked for with a nice view of the skyline and quick access to Tahoe Donner ski area. We appreciate that there was ample games, play equipment, and easy, check-in checkout processes. Would absolutely stay here again.

Tahoe Ski Weekend

We had a great time and enjoyed the home. A few issues w the description of the home online as it said it had a hot tub but did not. Also said it had multiple humidifiers but only found 1. I let owners know so they could get both things addressed for next renters. Kitchen is adequate in some ways but lacking in other ways Overall a nice place to stay.

Great house for a family

Cute little house and is great for a family. Backyard has a great sledding hill for the kids. Bedrooms are well laid out too and the kids loved having the bunkbeds. We’ve already booked the house again for the summer so we can enjoy the yard and area then too! Owners had great communication as well. Always responded within a half hour to any of our questions leading up to the trip, or during the trip. Thanks again!

This was our 4th time here and it just feels so great returning. We love it every year. It is the perfect spot for our family. The house is cozy and has everything you need. The backyard is the best! Hours of endless fun! We can't say enough about this place. Looking forward to next year.

A Perfect Trip to the Snow!

We absolutely loved our stay in Hale Mauka! The cabin is roomy but cozy, beautifully decorated, and with extremely comfortable beds. The highlight for us, though, was the backyard. We have gone to the Tahoe Donner area for several years now to play in the snow with our children and grandchildren. The sledding in the backyard was the best of any place we’ve been!! Amazing! As was the space for building snow forts and snowmen and having friendly snowball fights. We have already reserved for next year and can’t wait to go back. 5 stars!!!
