Overview

This four-day private route combines the cultural and natural highlights of central Japan in one continuous journey.

Instead of returning to Nagoya after each sightseeing day, the itinerary moves naturally through Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Toyama, Tateyama, Kamikochi, and Matsumoto. This reduces repeated travel and allows guests to experience several contrasting landscapes while travelling with their luggage in a private vehicle.

Each day reveals a different side of the Japanese Alps, from Takayama’s traditional merchant streets and Shirakawa-go’s thatched-roof village to Tateyama’s high-altitude scenery and Kamikochi’s peaceful riverside valley.

The final day is more than a direct return transfer. A short Matsumoto castle-town tour adds historic architecture, traditional storehouses, local shopping streets, and time for lunch before returning to Nagoya.

Sanmachi Suji

Travel into the mountainous Hida region and arrive in Takayama, a beautifully preserved town known for its wooden architecture and traditional streets.Walk through the Sanmachi historic district, where dark timber merchant houses, local craft shops, small cafés, and sake breweries line the narrow lanes. The compact old town offers an atmospheric introduction to rural central Japan.

Shirakawa-mura

Continue through the mountains to Shirakawa-go. Explore the village paths and admire the traditional gassho-style farmhouses, whose steep thatched roofs were designed to withstand the region’s heavy winter snow.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

From Tateyama Station, begin an independent return journey along the Toyama side of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.Ride the Tateyama Cable Car and Highland Bus through changing mountain scenery towards Murodo. At high elevation, the landscape opens into broad alpine plateaus surrounded by rugged peaks.Depending on the season, the area may feature towering snow walls, fresh alpine greenery, colourful autumn vegetation, or distant mountain views.

Kamikochi

Kamikochi is known for its clear river, forest paths, wooden bridges, and close views of the Northern Japan Alps. Walk beside the Azusa River, visit Kappa Bridge, or explore the peaceful scenery around Taisho Pond according to your interests and available time.

Matsumoto Castle

First, visit Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most visually distinctive historic castles. Its black exterior, white plaster walls, stone foundations, and surrounding moat create a dramatic scene against the distant mountain backdrop.Guests may enjoy the castle park and exterior views or enter the wooden keep with a separately purchased admission ticket.

Nawate Shopping District

Continue to Nawate Street, a compact pedestrian shopping lane beside the Metoba River. Small cafés, snack shops, antique stores, and frog-themed decorations give the street a cheerful local character.

Nakamachi Street

Walk onward to Nakamachi Street, where traditional white-and-black kura storehouses now contain craft shops, galleries, cafés, and local boutiques. The area preserves the atmosphere of Matsumoto’s former merchant quarter.
