After a nourishing breakfast, you’ll leave the rainforest behind and enter the scenic moorland. The trail for Day 2 is roughly 5 kilometres, and as you climb, the landscape opens up to reveal panoramic views of Mount Meru and the surrounding plains. Shira Camp, perched at 3,800 metres, offers a stunning vantage point to soak in the beauty of the mountain’s wilderness.

This day focuses on acclimatisation, as you ascend to the Lava Tower, a significant elevation gain that brings you to 4,600 metres. The terrain becomes more rugged as you hike through alpine desert. After reaching Lava Tower, you’ll descend gradually to Barranco Camp, sitting at around 3,960 metres. This day covers about 10 kilometres and plays a key role in preparing your body for the altitude.

The day starts with the thrilling challenge of climbing the Barranco Wall. Once you conquer this impressive feature, you’ll continue trekking across undulating terrain before heading to Barafu Camp, located at 4,600 metres. This is a shorter hike, around 7 kilometres, but it prepares you for the final ascent to the summit. Barafu Camp marks your last stop before your summit attempt, and the excitement builds as you prepare for the challenge ahead.

Summit day begins in the early hours, with a steep and demanding trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. You’ll reach the summit in time for a spectacular sunrise and celebrate your achievement at the top of Kilimanjaro. After soaking in the breathtaking views, you’ll begin the long descent to Mweka Camp, located at about 3,100 metres. The total distance for this day is around 18 kilometres, making it one of the most challenging yet rewarding days of the trek.

The final day takes you from Mweka Camp back down to Mweka Gate, descending through the lush rainforest zone. Covering about 10 kilometres, this descent allows you to reflect on your incredible journey. Once you arrive at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and bid farewell to your team of guides and porters, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure. The 6-day Machame Route is a challenging but rewarding trek that offers diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes, from rainforests to alpine deserts. Proper acclimatisation, physical preparation, and the guidance of experienced experts are essential for a successful summit and a memorable experience on Africa’s highest mountain.
