What you can expect

The tour start from Civitavecchia port/area. You will drive north with your English-speaking driver, through the beautiful landscape of Tuscany. After about a 50 minute’s drive, you will arrive in Maremma. A unique feature of Maremma is the variety of its territory: crystal clear, long beaches or impervious rocks, mountains covered with dense woods, lake and flat areas, green cultivated hills and natural thermal areas. A timeless area, rooted in ancient civilisations: the Etruscans before and the Romans later prospered for centuries leaving important testimonies, as shown by the Etruscan sites of Pitigliano, Vulci and the Roman city of Cosa. Tasting will be combined to a wine tasting class: you will have the chance to taste a selection of tuscan wines produced by the winemaker.
First stop is to visit Montemerano. This town flourished in the second half of the 10th century when the province’s residents began moving inland to escape malaria and the endless barbarian invasions that plagued the coastline. Montemerano was governed by a democratic institution until 1272, when it fell into the hands of the Aldobrandeschi. In the second half of the 13th century, it passed to the Baschi, the feudal family that funded its expansion. At the end of the 14th century, the “Repubblica Senese” forced the Baschi to retreat. In 1556, it became part of the Medici’s vast rule, before the Hasburg Lorraine assigned Montemerano to the Municipality of Manciano, where it remains today. Next stop will be the amazing hot springs waterfall in Saturnia, Cascate del Mulino originate from the sulphurous waters of the Terme di Saturnia, a nearby spa and hotel. The water flows from the natural spring at a temperature of 37.5°C (98°C) and thanks to the presence of a particular element, known as Thermal Plankton, it is thought to be good for the skin, as well as for the digestive, circulatory, motor and respiratory systems. The sulphurous waters of Saturnia were already known to the Etruscans first and then to the Romans who believed that the thermal waters, with their beneficial properties, were a gift from the gods. The power of the sulphurous water coming from a millenary spring has carved over the centuries the white travertine rock giving rise to natural pools where you can immerse yourself for a moment of relaxation and escape from reality. After that the last stop will be in Pitigliano a genuine medieval cities 12th century. It is also called the Small Tuscan Jerusalem, rises up out of a massive rock, creating a fascinating mix of architecture and nature, hanging on the “tufo” a local stone between green valleys with a magic vision. Admire the Orsini Palace, the Fontana Medicea and an aqueduct made of “tufo” from the 14th century. From the main square, three parallel streets enter the village, intersected by a series of picturesque alleys: staircases, little arcades and decorations will present you a real Tuscan experience.

Mirko, our guide, made it a great day tour. He was most informative and pointed out many points of interest that would easily have been missed. Many thanks again.

For the benefit of other travellers: the description was misleading as this tour does not actually include bathing time at the thermal hot springs (which was our main motivation for choosing this particular trip). Having said that, our lovely tour guide, Elisabetta, did her best to accommodate us so in the end we had a lovely day, and the misinformation was not her fault. The wine tasting at Aquavita winery with the host, Fabrizio, was wonderful. So overall, provided that a more accurate description is given to ensure expectations are met, we would say it’s a very nice way to spend a day as an alternative to Rome from Civitavecchia port.

A fabulous day with Mirko! It was exactly what we wanted to do for our day trip to Tuscany. The villages were free of tourists, authentic Tuscan villages. The wine tasting couldn't have been better. A wonderful day!!

Mirko was a wonderful guide. He was caring and knowledgeable. We enjoyed his company as we were transported to some stunning destinations. We loved the hot springs at Saturnia. Montemerano was so picturesque. Pitigliano was uniquely amazing. We can't say enough good things about the Villa Aquaviva. The setting and surrounding landscape was truly breathtaking. The host, Fabrizio was so welcoming. The experience was immensely informative and so relaxing. The wines were delicious as was the complimentary salami, ham, cheese, bread and olive oil. Bellissimo! We would love to visit again.

Mirko, our guide had the day all planned out and was still flexible as needed. He is very knowledgeable and has a passion for the beautiful area. He makes you feel like a friend traveling with him! The area is beautiful and the wines were delicious at Tenua Montauto winery. Filippo was very generous and hospitable during our visit.

We had a wonderful day driving around Tuscany. The villages we visited were spectacular and our tour guide was wonderful. We did this tour a day ahead of our cruise from Civitavecchia and it was a great way to visit the area north of us. The driver picked us up at our hotel. Couldn't have been more convenient!
