The mystical island sanctuary where history meets the legend of Dracula, in a setting straight out of a medieval film. It is world-famous as the location of Vlad the Impaler's tomb—the real-life inspiration for Count Dracula. The monastery is located on a small island in the middle of Lake Snagov. Access is via a long footbridge, offering a picturesque and peaceful experience, far from the hustle and bustle of Bucharest. In addition to its religious role, the island has served as a prison and coin mint in the past, adding a layer of mystery to the visit. The current building dates back to the 16th century and preserves original Byzantine frescoes. But the holy site is much much older. Admission is 4 EUR each

This innovation made Bucharest the first city in the world to be lit by gas lamps. On 1 August, 1943, B-24 Liberator bombers flew at low altitude from Libya to strike the refineries that fuelled the German war machine. The mission was so intense that five Medals of Honour were awarded in a single day — a record for the Air Force.
