The Leonidas Monument commemorates the battle in 480 BC in which a small band of about 300 Spartan soldiers held off a huge Persian army for three days.

Spring of Thermopylae

Thermopylae can be translated as ‘Hot Gates’, a reference to the volcanic hot springs near this Greek town. Directly opposite the monument of Leonidas of Sparta is a volcanic area with several of sulphur hot springs. According to the Ancient Greeks, these springs were believed to be a gateway to the Underworld (Hades). It is further mentioned in Ancient Greek Mythology as the place where the Greek hero Heracles washed off the poison from his legendary battle with the Hydra, thus turning the waters into hot springs.
Temple of Apollo
