The monument celebrates the many immigrant communities who came to Cape Breton to build new lives and work in Sydney’s coal and steel industries. At its centre is a real steelmaking melting pot salvaged from the former Sydney steel plant, connecting the monument directly to the region’s industrial past. Rising from the melting pot are 23 flags representing the different nations and communities whose people helped shape Whitney Pier and Sydney.
