What you can expect

Experience the magic of Portuguese forests on an adventurous trail hike. Madeira is known for its “levadas”, a system of aqueducts, popularly used as hiking trails. Drive to the quaint town of Santana and up to Queimadas Forestry Park to journey through one of the famous levada walks.
Deep in the Laurel forest, find a typical thatched house, which serves as a park landmark and creates a fairytale setting to begin your journey. This magical trail runs through the Serra de São Jorge and wanders through an emerald green paradise.
Take in outstanding views of the valleys and villages that lie below, until finally reaching the magnificent Caldeirão Verde waterfall. Make contact with the lush greenery as you walk along this historical levada in the company of your experienced guide.

I’m really glad that I booked this excursion. We had the most amazing guide we could have asked for: Bruno! He told us facts about nature, flora and fauna. The hike to Caldeirão Verde with him was most enjoyable. We were there at the start point in good time so we didn’t have to confront the crowds coming back as it is the same way back to start. Four tunnels and some narrow parts at times were the most challenging part of the journey. A lot of mud and water especially in tunnels so better have proper (waterproof) shoes and a torch/headlamp (although phone torch if good one is enough). Amazing scenery, a misty morning to begin, some sunshine when reached the caldera and then mist again when turning back. Overall a superb experience.

: You walk 6.5 km there and back, so 13 km! The route is demanding and requires absolute concentration on the path. ATTENTION: this tour is not suitable for people who do not have a head for heights and/or are afraid of heights!! There are many narrow places (with oncoming traffic!) and you have little time and opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view.

Too many people on the tour. Difficult to hear the guide. Guide did not wait for people. No time for pictures etc. Got home over an hour earlier than planned because of high tempo.
