Westerland is now the lively centre of Sylt – but behind the shopping streets and the beach promenade lies a turbulent past. On this guided walking tour, you will discover Alt-Westerland together with a native of Sylt and embark on an exciting journey through time.

The tour begins at the Old Village Church of St. Niels, the historic heart of the town. From here, the walking tour takes you past lovingly preserved Frisian houses and through streets that tell of the challenges of earlier centuries. Learn how storm surges threatened the village and how the inhabitants once lived under simple conditions from fishing and whaling.

The storey of a large Sylt family brings the development of Westerland to life – from a vulnerable island village to today's seaside resort of national importance. Personal anecdotes, historical background, and local insights make this guided tour an authentic encounter with the island's history.
