York City Walls
  • 20m
The walls of York have a rich and bloodthirsty history stretching back nearly 2000 years. Whilst free to walk on, visitors can often leave the city having missed out on discovering the secrets of the walls, and the city they have protected for so long. These personalised tours provide a totally unique, bespoke and entertaining history of the walls and the city they have protected for so long. Each tour is designed just for you, so please get in touch with the local provider if you have any special interests or needs. Refreshments can also be arranged along the way with some excellent coffee shops, pubs and restaurants to check out (own expense), and in addition will also tour other parts of the city too (Castle, Minster, Shambles etc) should you require. As local tour guides passionate about the city, they can also handle any restaurant bookings or just general advice about other things to do in York during your stay. As these are bespoke tours, please contact the local provider as soon as you can in advance so your booking can be guaranteed and the guides have enough time to prepare the tour for your adequately. Please note that the walls close at dusk, and some parts are occasionally closed if there are icy conditions. Whilst the walls are well designed for tourists, wheelchair access is limited however please contact the local provider if you require disabled access as alternative routes which walk beside the walls, not on them, can be arranged. Should you require an evening tour, please contact the local provider to discuss your requirements, often the guides focus more on the other areas of York as well as the walls to provide a more atmospheric experience. Please note that on this tour it will be only yourselves and your tour guide, for a truly personalised experience of the city.

I had booked this tour, but wasn't given a meeting time. Emailed and called the operator and heard nothing, so at 8:00pm the night before our tour, I booked an alternative tour. At 9:45am morning of our tour, I got a reply to my email that we were meeting at 10:00am. Met our tour guide not long after and told him about the lack of communication, and he blamed Viator. Regardless, we started off on our tour, but he then told us that he had another tour booked in at 11:00am so we would have people joining us. So much for a "private tour". Turns out they had booked a viking tour, which we are not remotely interested in, so once they joined us, the tour turned into a viking tour! Definitely not what we booked! The tour description on Viator says it can be personalised for what you are interested in, and that we could be met at our hotel. No offer to meet at hotel, nor any question of what we were interested in at the start. It also shows approximately 12 places that we would attend on the tour. We went to about three of those. The tour guide spent most of the time talking about the history of the walls, which yes was interesting but went on for far too long, however as the tour description says, the tour was included to a walk on the walls. Didn't happen. I ended up telling the guide that we were going to join the other tour I had booked (which was too late, as it had left an hour before). Total waste of money. We spent $235 on this tour, which I consider a total waste. After leaving the tour, we went on the hop on hop off bus, and learnt far more and saw way more than we did on the tour. I suggest you avoid!

John, our guide, was wonderful! He is incredibly knowledgeable about both the history and the area. We had limited time in York but felt like we spent days there, after the tour. John lives and knows the city very well and was proud to share with us on this private tour, answering all our questions. Take this tour! John is very flexible if you communicate your time preference.

John was a wealth of historical information on the area and it was fascinating! I love how he took us right into the stories by imagining conversations or putting us in as characters to help the kids follow. Both our boys (12 & 14) enjoyed the tour as well. This is a MUST do while you’re in York!

Excellent tour. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Our guide provided a comprehensive overview not only of York and its history but also of the history of Northern England and the Viking invaders. Very informative and entertaining.
