I loved the concept of The Vine. Go with an open mind. The designer, NIni Andrade Silva, has her design studio (with a rooftop restaurant) in the harbour which is free to visit. This hotel is so unusual. It is a taste of Madeira encapsulated in one building. Black volcanic stones, seats and cushions shaped like pebbles, a waterfall (or levada?) hand basin. The Terra restaurant (for breakfast) is meant to give you the feeling of eating under the vines but I am still not convinced. The bedroom lighting is quirky. Get a head start and ask for a demonstration before you settle in. I particularly liked the touch sensitive floor around the bed. The members of staff are friendly and helpful. The views of Funchal from the rooftop are to die for. Go just as the sun is setting. On a more practical note, this hotel is in Funchal itself, not out on a limb like many other hotels. We were able to walk to everything in town. You have everything you need on your doorstep, pharmacy, supermarket, bread shop, fruit sellers and a local taxi rank. You are right above La Vie shopping complex. For our arrival we booked a Vine Hotel airport transfer which made for a seamless journey as the driver took us (and our luggage) right to the reception desk.

Excellent location lovely hotel and breakfast was great but room was very noisy as sounds on the street echo up so take ear plugs!! But that was the only downside

It's a different type of hotel , in the sense of being small and to the norm and probably isn't

The design of the hotel is very nice, the swimming pool was disappointingly small. The rooms are very nice but the one thing letting it down is food. I love to see people cooking and interact with them, it is possible to request an omelette for example but you have to guess what you would like in it rather than speaking to the chef and seeing the ingredients in front of you. The food magically appears but this option is slow and not well advertised (I only discovered it was possible on my third day seeing another guest order) On the same topic of food, we tried room service once, it was very expensive, a limited menu and not impressive on arrival. Very basic quality for the price. The Spa was very nice but again very expensive, had a great massage but €85 each for 50 minutes is very steep. Enjoyed the hotel and its central location but might consider other options if to return.

The hotel is lovely, the staff are nice but it’s very ‘worn’ in places and is in need of touching up a lot (the interior). The towel in our room was badly stained and one of the gowns was dirty with make up on it. The pull out bedside drawer had coffee stains and nail polish on it. The underbed lights didn’t work. Breakfast is small but a decent selection, the location is good and the shopping mall below is handy!

Modern hotel in great location

The hotel is great with a lovely roof top bar and pool. The pool is fairly small but fine for a dip. The facilities are good but the room a little on the small side and not cleaned on Sundays which isn't ideal if you are just there for a weekend.

Nice hotel in good location

Pros: It's location is very close to the harbour
Cons: The air conditioning could be more efficient and a stronger wifi signal.
Location: The hotel is about 20 minutes away from the cable car. The cable car and botanical gardens are worth a visit. visit the Nuns Valley by local bus.
The staff were excellent and very helpful in recommending places to visit. Good choice and quality of food at breakfast. The air conditioning was a bit weak and had little effect on the temperature in the room. The wifi was just okay. Very modern hotel with lovely waterfall shower. The hotel is in a good position close to restaurants. It is part of a shopping mall and there is a supermarket there which is handy for purchasing water etc.its Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the harbour, unfortunately we were not able to visit the pool area as it was being refurbished. Would certainly use the hotel again.
