NEIGHBORHOOD OVERVIEW / TIPS for RESTAURANTS and STORES
Harlem is very vivid with new many restaurants of all cuisines , jazz clubs, trendy coffees and pubs, Whole-food, and the 125th commercial corridor with all the big chains . Some specific recommendations:
1) For Groceries: There is a small shop on the corner of 134th and 7th ave ( just cross the street and go to the corner) and they are open 24/7 for the immediate essentials including milk and juice. For more serious shopping - there is a new Wholefood on 125th and 6th, but there are other supermarkets ( less fancy but good) close to the house (132/8th, and 130/6th). Before WholeFood opened I use to go to Best Market for the best sushi you can ask for ( 8th ave between 118 and 119) . it is a walk but it worth it if you like sushi.
2) for Resturants- My favorite is on the other side of 7th Ave (between 134 and 133) -Yatenga. Go two blocks south , on the corner of 132 you will find Renaissance which is open also for breakfast . I also like The Edge Cafe on 139th and Edgcombe ave. Treat yourself one day to Red Rooster, corner Social, Barawine ( all on Lenox between 126th and 120). There are also good restaurants on 8th ave ( from 117 to 127)
3) Many Jazz places around. The closest one is Bill’s Place, on 148 W 133rd st. Twov minutes walk. Bill and company play jazz in the basement on Friday's and Saturday's eves . Go online and book a 20 $ ticket and come early as the seats are not marked..

Very disappointing stay

My experience here was extremely dissatisfying. First of all, the host is very unresponsive. I arrived with still no response as to what the code was to get in. Because I was travelling I had to leave my luggage by the door (which in this area, you don’t want to do) to go find wifi to message her for the dial code. I waited a good hour before I got the proper response with the code. This host is not very friendly either. The room is clean, but when I went to put my clothes in the cabinet (it’s a minimum stay of a month) the dresser fell completely apart. The hot plate does not work. All of the appliances did not work in fact. You’ll have to buy your own like I did. Quite inconvenient. The area in Harlem is not safe. I was approached numerous times with stare downs, as well as one time a guy grabbing my grocery bags from my hands. Not safe. Do not go out at night either. Lastly, I simply asked for a garbage bag so I could clean, and she had responded two days later with “I’ll ask my cleaner for one”. Never got back to me after that. Three weeks later. Very poor communication, and not helpful whatsoever. **I’m sure the owner will try to defend herself, but please believe me when I say, this place is nowhere near worth the price and troubles.

Efficient and Convenient

I stayed in Mina's studio room for 7 weeks while I worked on a television production. It is a tight space but for my needs it was perfect. I was fortunate to receive portioned meals from work, so I cannot speak to the amenities of the kitchenette area as I only used the mini fridge and microwave. I was already familiar with the neighborhood so I had no trouble finding my way around, but having drug store, laundry, transportation and places to eat all within short walking distance (5-10 mins depending on how fast you walk) was a huge bonus. Mina was very nice and I appreciated that she checked in with me regularly. And she gives thorough instructions for the check-in process well and has pertinent information posted on the door for quick reference. I'm a very self sufficient person so this was great for me to have. There was only one random mother nature dilemma while I stayed there that was completely beyond her control, but Mina responded immediately, came in person to check on me and made sure have it all taken care of and cleaned up right away. If the opportunity comes up and this space is available at the time I would need it, I would stay here again.
