Welcome to The Gold Suite : Your home away from home
We're so glad you found us.
Tucked in our family home in the heart of Normal Heights, The Gold Suite is our lovingly designed guest retreat — a space we created with the same care and attention we'd put into hosting a dear friend. As empty nesters whose grown children have scattered across the country, we know what it means to travel well and feel truly at home in a new place. That's exactly the feeling we want for you.
The Space
Step inside and you'll immediately notice the centerpiece — a stunning CB2 Alchemy bed with its signature gold-finished metal frame. It's the kind of bed that makes you pause and smile when you walk in, and even better to sink into at the end of a long day. Paired with a cozy electric fireplace that fills the room with warmth on cool San Diego evenings, the studio has the feel of a boutique hotel with the soul of a real home.
For additional guests, our versatile IKEA Hemnes daybed serves as a stylish sofa by day and transforms into two twin beds — Suite sleeping accommodations up to four.
Sleeping for four? The Ikea Hemnes daybed can be extended to accommodate two twin sleepers — simply add this at the time of booking. Please note that due to the room's layout, the extended daybed creates a narrow passage between the Hemnes and the Gold Alchemy bed, so this configuration is best suited for guests who are comfortable in a cozy space.
The kitchenette is stocked with the essentials and includes a Keurig K-Cup machine with a curated selection of coffee and tea pods — perfect for that first quiet cup before you head out the door. But when you're ready for the full café experience, you're truly spoiled for choice. Dark Horse Coffee Roasters, a beloved San Diego-born roaster known for their small-batch specialty coffees, is right on Adams Avenue and a neighborhood favorite. Adams Ave is home to An's Dry Cleaning - named the #1 ice cream shop in America by USA Today two years in a row! The Starbucks on Adams has a sunny outdoor patio that looks across the street to the charming Kensington-Normal Heights Branch Library and its shaded park — a lovely spot to sip your coffee, read, or just take in the neighborhood on a sunny morning. And for something completely different, Maya Moon Collective offers ceremonial cacao drinks and organic bites in a warm, art-filled space that feels like nothing else in the city. A vibrant selection of cafes and your dedicated workspace back at the studio make it easy to stay on top of work, and whether you're here for a week-long business trip or a long weekend getaway, you'll have everything you need.
We welcome one small dog with prior approval — simply add your pet at the time of booking. A small pet fee applies, which ensures our housekeeping team has the time to thoroughly prepare the space for you and every guest who follows. Undisclosed pets may result in an additional cleaning fee.
The Neighborhood — Adams Avenue and Beyond
If you haven't been to Normal Heights before, you're in for a real treat. It's known as "San Diego's best-kept secret." Adams Avenue is the beating heart of this neighborhood — a vibrant, walkable corridor lined with independent restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops that capture everything people love about San Diego's local culture. It's the kind of street where you can wander for blocks and discover something new every time. Adams Ave is home to An's Dry Cleaning - named the #1 ice cream shop in America by USA Today two years in a row!
Start your morning with a legendary breakfast at Ponce's Restaurant, a neighborhood institution that has been serving beloved Mexican-American comfort food for decades — the kind of place where the regulars know each other by name and the huevos rancheros are worth waking up early for. If you're in more of a café mood, grab a seat at Dark Horse Coffee Roasters for a beautifully crafted pour-over or espresso, or cross the street to the Starbucks patio and enjoy your drink overlooking the Kensington-Normal Heights Library and its peaceful, tree-lined park. For an experience unlike anywhere else, step into Maya Moon Collective, Southern California's first cacao café, where you'll find rich ceremonial drinking cacao, gluten-free pastries, and a welcoming space filled with local art and good energy.
For dinner, the options are just as exciting. Bosforo is a buzzy modern Turkish restaurant serving wood-fired kebabs, shareable mezze platters, and Mediterranean-inspired cocktails — it's quickly become one of the most talked-about openings in San Diego. Or head just down the avenue to Tanuki Sake Bar in neighboring Kensington for exceptional sushi, izakaya small plates, and a carefully curated sake selection in a cozy, intimate setting.
Beyond the dining scene, Adams Avenue is home to craft breweries, live music venues, vintage shops, and the historic Adams Avenue Theatre. Throughout the year, the avenue comes alive with beloved community events — Adams Avenue Unplugged, the Adams Avenue Street Fair (Southern California's largest free music festival), Taste of Adams Avenue, and the famous San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, which runs right along Adams Avenue and fills the neighborhood with incredible energy. There's always something happening on Adams Ave.
For everyday essentials, Vons grocery store is just minutes away for stocking up the kitchenette, and you'll find pharmacies, banks, and everything else you'd need within a short walk or quick drive.
Beyond the Neighborhood
Normal Heights sits in the geographic heart of San Diego, which means you're perfectly positioned to explore everything the city has to offer. Downtown San Diego and the Gaslamp Quarter are just ten minutes away. Balboa Park and the world-famous San Diego Zoo are practically next door. The beaches of Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach are a short drive west, and if you're heading north, you can reach La Jolla in about twenty minutes. Whether you're here for work, a family visit, or a proper vacation, this location makes it easy to do it all.
Your Hosts
We're a friendly couple who lives right on the property, though as fellow travelers and proud parents of grown children, we're often on the road ourselves visiting family.
