The lobby and common areas when you enter the hotel are beautiful. Rich colored woods very expensive looking. Much like 20s or 1930s vintage furniture decor, etc. very elegant looking. The swimming pool was looked adequate though we didn’t use it. The fitness room was clean and fairly well equipped. Our room was clean but not well designed. The area for hanging clothes was inside the bathroom, which we didn’t think was a good location. The bathroom had not been elation fan so after a shower, everything in there was somewhat steamy. The shower enclosure was a pain of glass that covered half of the front with no door to close I know that’s a common design, but we didn’t care for it much as water splashed out into the floor rather easily.

Old world charm. Hate the upgrade charge for two rooms next to each other but not adjoined. Parking valet is $28 plus tip. No weekday breakfast room service. Coffee was not good in rooms.

This is a beautiful hotel. You can tell there’s history there as soon as you walk in. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The only problem I had was with housekeeping. While we were out for the day housekeeping came in and cleaned which was fine. Except for some reason they turned the lock to keep the door open for easy access I guess but when they finished and left the room they didn’t close the door so when we arrived back late that night it was still open so needless to say I wasn’t happy about that

Great couple of nights away in Chattanooga

Quick trip to somewhere we’d never been before. Checked out a few places and booked here as it had great reviews, great location and some history there. Also we’d booked into the Bridgmans restaurant. Spacious rooms, nice oldie worldie decor. Great vibe and very comfortable. We stayed in room 1016 and we could hear a little road noise to start, but after 10pm it went very quiet. Slept great! Would we go there again? Yes! And for sure we’d go to have steak at the restaurant too. Very good service and excellent food.

Major red-flag safety issues

I prefer not to take elevators, so I always request a room on the lowest floor available. The hotel accommodated this with a second-floor room—but failed to mention that it’s not accessible by stairs (at all). The only stairwell is a fire exit that leads to an unlit back alley with a door that PHYSICALLY CANNOT be opened (by anyone!!) from the outside. That means guests, staff, or emergency responders have no way to access the floor without using the elevator. To reach our room without the elevator, we had to wait in the alley while a staff member rode up in the elevator, then came down the stairs to let us in. Worse, the stairwell door was nearly impossible to open from the inside. My husband had to karate kick it open every time we left (kind of funny in retrospect, would not be so funny in an emergency situation). In an emergency, guests would be trapped. They would be stuck at the bottom of the stairwell at a door that cannot be opened from the outside (or inside). Even the manager couldn’t open it and admitted it needed fixing—but nothing changed. When we voiced concern, staff said, “Well, it was built in the ‘70s.” I can’t imagine this layout is up to code and I hope it’s a wake up call for Read before a real emergency. Our room was also dirty, the tub was peeling, and there was a bug in the bathroom. I have photos. The Read House may market itself as a historic gem, but I saw a troubling disregard for safety and cleanliness. The worst hotel experience I’ve had.
