I’ve been staying at this hotel for almost 40 years. It’s never been fancy, but it used to be comfortable. Not any more!! - Our AC didn’t work and our room was about 83 degrees over our 3 day stay. We had to sleep with open windows and no screens. The air quality was terrible due to a fire in NJ. They refused to switch us to another room. Always an excuse. The AC never was never fixed in the entire three days!!! It was very uncomfortable! We tried to avoid being in the room. Also: No one ever answers the phone at the front desk…ever!! G-d forbid someone has an emergency!! We paid extra for a “deluxe” room, and this was the situation. Little annoyances included: no tv remote, it didn’t work and it took over a day for them to find a compatible one! Also, no hairdryer, no robe or slippers, no laundry bag,no coat hangers in closet, no in room coffee maker. - On the bright side, The maid service was good and the room was clean. - Barring a change in ownership/management, I would not choose this hotel again.

Great location, fantastic roof top bar! The condition of our room (631), however was laughable. Could not lift the shades and had to pack/unpack in the terrible room lighting (called front desk several times about it). Part of NYC prices are about location and views, so being able to look outside a window should be standard. Shower head was not working properly. Much of the fixtures/furniture was barely functioning, with truly disastrous lighting throughout (give me 5 minutes and $100 at Home Depot and I can find you much better lighting). Perhaps most disappointingly, the front desk was stunningly dismissively of my feedback. As I was politely pointing out our rooms substantial deficiencies, I was being waived away nonchalantly, as in "we know, and you are checked-out and need to move on now". Alas, moving on we, and moving on for good from the Empire Hotel. Best of luck; you will need it!

My Go To Hotel

My daughter attends Fordham University, Lincoln Center Campus, so I always stay at the Hotel Empire. I've never had an unpleasant experience.

We arrived at the hotel only to find that the room looked nothing like the photos advertised. The entire space was dirty and had a strong, unpleasant odor. There was visible dust throughout, no fresh bedding, spider webs in the corners, and stains on the walls. The conditions were far below acceptable standards, and the overall experience was very disappointing. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Neither Expedia for misleading advertising of the Hotel and Unhygienic Conditions. Was a matter of health not staying in that room.

The location and staff service at this hotel were top notch! Easy to get around, but not so central that it felt overwhelming. We landed at 7am, and went to the hotel to drop our bags assuming that there wouldn't be a room ready. They got us into a room right away! The cleanliness and condition of the room left something to be desired, but it is an old building and for the price and the location it was well worth it.
