Ok arrived and as expected more of a hostel than a hotel.. lots of young back packers by the door.. But I just needed something cheap and near the train station as I was leaving at 3am in the morning.. Digital check in and the young lady on reception give me a door key on the third floor.. Lift available.. again as expected and small functional room with en suite bathroom.. Two single beds..as requested.. Comfortable enough with clean sheets.. room a little warm as it was a beautiful day and the room had no fan.. Very happy with the shower and body wash.. only requirement for me.. Clean bed and a nice hot shower.. Maybe asking why have only given a general score of two.. As was leaving for the train and the airport at 3am.. 11.30pm..the noise and the slamming of doors was horrendous... Now I'm no grouch but after seeing that down stairs in reception is the following. Pool table.. games room and music playing, everything a young person wants.. Large group outside seem to enjoy what was on offer.. Stayed in AO hostel hotel..in Antwerp recently never had the issue there..

Worth a try

We were very surprised to learn this was a hostel, rather than a hotel. That said, our stay was good. It was close to the train station, Breakfast was good, it was busy with students but overall, it turned out to be a good place to stay.

Only complain is the noise between 1am to 3am, people laughing/talking out loud on the halls, but is manageable. Close to the Train station and bus was a plus. Area is really safe and can see people walking late during the night.

The hotel was fantastic for the stay, but one night there were too many kids on the hallways hitting doors for more than an hour... the staff didnt do anything. Other than that, I had a great time in there, the front desk and resto-bar is excellent.

When we checked in, the beds in the room had been used and the old linens were still on, and the bathroom was not cleaned either. So we asked for another room, which we were given. However, the new room also had two beds that had been used and not cleaned, and the trash can was full of garbage from the earlier guests, but the reception said there were no more rooms available that we could move to. The heaters in the room and the bathroom did not work, so it was cold in the room. The bathroom smelled like urine, and several of the lights above the beds did not work. In addition, the pipe under one of the sinks was broken and water went all over the bathroom floor, and the other sink was partially stopped up and drained slowly. Thank goodness the shower was hot this morning, and the breakfast was not expensive and plentiful. I am sorry to have to give such a bad review, but our party of 6 were severely disappointed with our stay at A&O and will never stay there again. I think we should not have to pay for such a bad quality and unhappy night and am requesting a full refund of the cost of our stay.

Blood stains everywhere. Not ours!

My adult son and I stayed one night in a room at this hostel mentioned above, in early December. We went to the room around midnight and immediately got ready for bed, using only the small bedside light to do so. When my son went to pull the duvet over himself, he noticed blood spots in several places on the duvet cover. As it was so late and we wanted to get to sleep, we removed the cover and used the duvet like that, intending to speak to reception the next morning. When we got up on the Tuesday morning and opened the curtains, we noticed there was also blood on the bottom sheet my son had been lying on!. Further inspection revealed blood on the room floor and also on the bathroom floor!. We left the room and I spoke to the duty manager about it, at reception. His response was to offer me two free drink coupons (not any use, as we were leaving anyway) and gave me a card with an email address on, to complain to. We didn’t pay a lot for the night’s stay and while we didn’t expect a lot, we certainly didn’t expect someone else’s blood all over the room!. I gave the hostel over a week to respond to my complaint, but to date I haven’t heard anything back.

We did not realize this facility was a youth hostel since it was listed as “hotel”. However, we had a nice but utilitarian room. It was good for our needs. However, it is in a residential area so if you are looking for shops, restaurants or nightlife the train station is your only option.
