Central location but functional experience

Hotel is in a great central location for exploring Rome. Service is functional but not friendly. Rooms and overall hotel looks tired and out dated- needs a refurb. Would stay there again due to location if suited my budget and cost rated well against other 3 star level hotels. This is not a 4 star.

Great location

Arrived at 1pm room not ready told to come back at 3 which we did change of staff to be told room would not be ready till 6. I told them this was not good enough. After a frantic 15 mins they gave us a nice room. Problem seems to be they deal with a lot of coach parties and were all organised for them arriving throughout the day. This was our only complaint. The hotel is in a great location 15 min walk from the Vatican. It is also within walking distance of the metro & all the main attractions. While we were waiting for our room we had a nice lunch across the road from hotel Grotta Azzura. We had a nice room spotlessly clean everyday Staff helpful, continental breakfast was good. Cooked scrambled egg bacon & hotdog sausage was poor by British standard, but enough of other things to fill up for a busy day. Only found out on last day wi fi free, use hotel not Swisscom as they charge. Also thought everything was included with e bookers but had to pay a local tax 42 euro on leaving. Overall we had good stay 5 nights and would use this Hotel again. This was my first review.

Tired rooms and midnight builders

We had 3 rooms in 4 days. The rooms are tired, the ceilings are dirty and damaged, the electrics are dodgy and the lifts are scary. To top it all off the builders started at midnight using pneumatic breakers to chip at concrete balconies which are in danger of falling off. Breakfast of tinned fruit salad and nasty coffee finished us off. Just don't do it.

Great location

Great location near the Vatican. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Would stay there again. Only couple of criticisms was the option of an extra pillow in the room would have been good and some milk for a cuppa.

Great location but if that is a 4 star hotel Maggie was a communist!

Seriously, there is no way on earth Hotel Cicerone should be awarded four stars. I've stayed in many 4 and 5* hotels all over the world, even in Italy, and I know what I'm talking about. The concierge service is pretty much non existent, we made several complaints that the shaver outlet was not working only to have the staff say "it must be your equipment" or "you are not meant to charge your toothbrush on it" :/ Saying that, the maids that attended our room were very nice and amenable. We stayed for a week and in that time the duvet cover was not changed even though it got quite a bit messed up after a night out, I would most certainly expect it to be changed in the next morning have this been a "real" 4* hotel. Breakfast was very average and both the coffee and the juices were horrendous! Coffee was stale and the juice (from what appeared to be a 20 year old machine) was horrid, sugary water with some E-numbers. If you stay here order the free cappuccinos with your breakfast, they were pretty good. There isn't much to choose from either, the hot options were the same everyday: scrambled egg, bacon and their own species of "cheap & nasty" sausages. The best thing about this place is it's location, you can't go wrong with it. Easy walking distance from pretty much all that is worth seeing in Rome and at the same time is not too busy or too noisy. Now, if you want the same location and a TRUE 4* experience, then try Hotel ISA... just half a block down the road and much, much better.

Good average hotel in great location

The Hotel was fairly ordinary and geared to groups but it was immaculately clean, comfortable and the staff were friendly and helpful Breakfast was plentiful and there was a wide choice of food. The light switches were a bit of a mystery but generally an easy and good place to stay.

Avarage

Hotel is very dated, noisy inside and outside. Two of the staff stood in the corner and watched us when we carried our suitcases. There was no cattle or tea in the room like most of the 4 star hotels. Check with the hotel before booking as most of the information on e-booker's website is out of date such as free internet, breakfeast, TV, etc...I wanted to ask some directions around the hotel but I was afraid that staff might charge for that. This hotel must have been really posh hotel in 1980s but it is avarage in 2012. Plus sleeping in two single mattress in a double bedstead is very uncomfortable. You might wake up with a backache if sleep in between...It is easy to find a good hotel for same price in Rome as this hotel is only avarage for 4 star hotel...

Great Staff, Room noisy

Great Staff but the room was noisy due to traffic and single glazing which did not dampen the noise. If you go to the Cicerone, choose a room over a side street and upgrade to a non standard room as these rooms are a little basic. The breakfast was nice and value for money was good. We would recommend this hotel as it was good overall and in an ideal location for the Vatican and good restuarants/bars.

Quality Hotel in Good Location

Very comfortable in good respectable location with easy access to Vatican and all the best sites. Staff always courteous and helpful. Ample breakfasts to suit all tastes. We went on recommendation and were not disappointed.
