From the outside the property is shabby and run down, not a great first impression but inside the pub feels warm and cosy. We got checked in and shown to our room by the perfectly lovely landlady but unfortunately they hadn’t thought to put the heating on (it was 5pm early February) so it was freezing in there. In fact, not till we went down to the bar an hour later or so to say the radiators weren’t heating up did they miraculously then start working.... the room was extremely basic although I can’t fault it for cleanliness. The bed not very comfortable and no shower over the bath. Tea and coffee in the room but no one came in after our first night to top up or change the mugs, so we had only dirty mugs the second day. We were very annoyed on the first night at the noisy party of 30 or so in the restaurant that had been placed directly below our room and kept us up, only to be followed by the sound of tables being scraped across the floor. I expected some noise from the restaurant but considering we were, I think, one of two guests staying there could have been some more thoughtful planning of the restaurant. On that note, we ate there the first night and breakfast both mornings and cannot fault the food or the service at all, it really was excellent and I would recommend eating there to anyone in the area. But that’s where my recommendation stops, for £75 a night I did not feel I got what I paid for and I would be looking elsewhere for accommodation next time.
