They're all dead Dave

Well, after first travelling to Caledonian House in Dunoon, I blame the phone sat nav, I arrived couple of hours later than planned. Everyone mentions lovely staff, and that was true. The entertainment was good, solo singer/guitarist, focused a bit much on telling you which artists are dead after he finished their song, with the odd, they're still alive. You almost wanted to cheer. Food was ok, had the vegan burger and a vegan pizza in the bar. Good range of options for breakfast. Room was good, and front viewing which was fully worth it for the morning view. Down sides, I parked round the back and theres less than obvious dip which didn't notice till I backed into it in the morning. Didn't notice any signs, there was a Hilux parked next to me, would have been ok in that. What's with the pillow shortage? Seems to be a common theme. Would I stay again? Yes, I like it because it's human, bit quirky and the setting can't be beaten.

This property was very disappointing. We paid $770AUD for 2 basic rooms for 1 night. Absolute exorbitant price which you would pay for a 5 star hotel. The beds were awful and you only got 1 pillow each which fell down the back of the bed all night due to a large gap between the wall and the bed (yes we tried to push the bed back, you can’t). You may as well have not had a pillow as they were like pancakes. You couldn’t swing a cat in the bathroom, they were pretty awful. There were no PowerPoints besides the kettle and the TV points for charging phones etc, nothing next to the bedsides. They couldn’t even straighten the picture on the wall. That’s been picky but seriously, the price and what you get, absolute joke. Highly recommend staying somewhere else. The cleaner also chased us to the lift and stopped the door from closing to find out what room we had come from so she could go and clean. Said the front office don’t tell her quick enough about check outs for her to turn the rooms over. On departure dirty linen was at the front of the hotel in the ground, gross! Not to mention the barman the night before was screaming for TRACEY over the whole bar area, scared the crap out of us, I thought someone had Tourette Syndrome. Poor Tracey, being summoned like a dog because he needed assistance when there were 2 people waiting to be served. Maybe if he picked up his pace a bit he would be more efficient, this happened twice, not just once.

Good base for walks in the area. Reception & dining area nice. Breakfast self service, range of food ok. Room clean but very warm due to large central heating pipe running through it. Rooms clean but could probably do with a freshen up. Would stay there again.

Upon arrival nicely greeted and checked in.Excellent Staff they deserve a pay rise. The room was nicely prepared and presented, great housekeeping staff. Barman was excellent at his job .The dining room staff were also extremely helpful and professional. The hotel needs a little Investment into itsome aspects are tired upgrade doors and locks to a card system would be good. Breakfast is superb highly recommend it. Black mold and overpriced

If you're looking to spend top dollar and spend the night in a hotel with black mold in the bathroom and rude attendants, then this is your place. The hotel is very run down and seriously needs some basic maintenance so the rugs don't snag your luggage wheels, the floors don't creak and the black mold in the bathroom is addressed. The attendants that I spoke to at night and in the morning offered no suggestions, apologies or other rooms when asked so I didn't expose myself to potential dangerous spores. Wouldn't stay here again if you paid me.

What a great location and stunning view. The staff were excellent the property was clean and no complaints from any of the four rooms we had booked. the bar was very reasonably priced as were evening meals. The buffet breakfast is well worth the money booking the night before will save a little but either way excellent value. We would stay here again

Staff were pleasant but dining and bar areas were horribly understaffed, especially in view of presence of a large tour coach group and a small coach group. Odd policy that drinks and meals had to be paid separately so credit card had to be processed multiple times for one meal.

We had a pleasant stay at The Caledonian Hotel. We booked this hotel primarily because it has a lift, and there are mostly stairs in hotels so far. Our room was facing the Loch, but was also facing the main road to Glasgow, so was busy with traffic. Although we had a comfortable room, we found the room to be somewhat shabby, and especially the bathroom. But, we did have a nice hot shower, but the bed was very uncomfortable. We didn’t enjoy a good nights sleep. Breakfast and on-site dinner were good variety and the staff were excellent. Location was a good distance from any other facilities, and you would need a car to access. We did have a car, and the onsite parking was good. The hotel is popular with bus tours, and dog friendly.

The location was the best thing about this hotel but I would never stay here again. The rooms were unbearably hot so that explained why all the windows were open when we arrived, the beds were so uncomfortable, creaky thin mattresses and it just smelt bad in general. I wasn’t expecting amazing rooms but temperature control and decent beds should just be standard for hotels.

Sub-par comfort and service

We stayed for two nights during peak summer season. For the price paid (could easily get a 4 star room in London) I would say the service was sub-standard. Arriving at 2:30pm we were told to wait until around 3:15pm (check-in was agreed as 3pm in contract of service). Room looked like it was not updated since the 80s, dirty and unkempt. Bed creaks and hostel-looking. Third world basic amenities. Bathroom had damp/air vent and issues. When you took a shower it would leak out. Had to ask twice to give us shampoo, in the end I went to reception to ask for it. You can't access the lakes outside unless you walk to footpath and even then it's not a nice walk. Location is far from city centre - need a car or taxi to move around. Take my advice, stay in the city centre if you are coming to climb Ben Nevis.
