Holidays in Monterey

With as many as 28,000 people calling this place home, you're certain to make plenty of new friends!

Sacramento, the capital of this state, is situated 140 miles north of Monterey, while Capitola can be located 25 miles to the north.

Even though there are many things to do here, Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Stanford University definitely stand out. Fisherman's Wharf and the California State University Monterey Bay are every bit as impressive.

If you are planning a holiday for the entire family, trips to Dennis the Menace Park and the Monterey County Fairgrounds will most definitely be a winner. Are the kids still bouncing off the walls? Keep the adventure going with a trip to the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds and the MY Museum Monterey County Youth Museum.

The Sante Adairius Rustic Ales is the place to be if knocking back a few cold ones is your preferred way to relax at the end of a day. Ask about tours or simply sit back and savour their distinctive creations and flavours.

You'll need to keep your eyes wide open as the experienced racers fly through the course at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. One blink at these speeds and you might miss it!

Can you distinguish your cabernet sauvignon from your merlot? Whether you're a connoisseur or a novice who simply likes a drop, you'll discover something new at the Bernardus Winery and the Galante Vineyards. You can also sit back, relax and sample the local red or white at the Talbotts Vineyards and the Cowgirl Winery.

Keen on an alfresco lunch? Grab some snacks and venture to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park or Point Lobos State Reserve for a relaxing picnic. Alternatively, head outdoors and get some exercise at Lone Cypress Pine or Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Want to find out about upcoming events, tours, local hotspots or kid-friendly outings? Big Sur Station and Carmel Chamber of Commerce are your best resources for any queries you may have about your visit.

Perhaps you're seeking someplace to silence the busy workings of your mind. If so, the tumbling waters of McWay Falls might just be your answer.

Venture to Carmel Beach and Capitola Beach and let the salty breeze and sounds of the ocean calm your mind. Seacliff State Beach and Manresa State Beach are a few other spots you might like to consider.

If you're looking to recharge your batteries, you'll uncover plenty of nature reserves to explore. Ease your way into it with a breath of clean air among the plants and animals at Fort Ord Dunes State Park or Pinto Lake Park. Two further areas to take a look at are Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and Garland Ranch Regional Park.

Walk the quiet halls, study the engaging displays and chat to the helpful staff. The Maritime Museum and the National Steinbeck Centre are comforting places to think and find out something new. If you have extra time, also go to the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History and the Portola Art Gallery.

Learn all about the seafaring past of the region while checking out the salt-encrusted artifacts that are housed at the Stanton Centre.

Science nerds will be over the moon with the Doc Rickett's Pacific Biological Laboratories, where an entire array of fascinating scientific objects and exhibits are just waiting to be discovered.

Whichever genre of art floats your boat, you're sure to find it in Monterey. Why not start your day of gallery going at the Monterey Museum of Art and the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada? Also look into what displays are on at the Grove Homescapes and the Strouse and Strouse Studio-Gallery.

Take a fascinating journey into days gone by at the Pajaro Valley Historical Association and the Capitola Historical Museum. Both exhibitions pride themselves on making the city's vivid history entertaining and appealing to visitors.

Are you eager to discover a few historic attractions? A trip to the Naval Postgraduate School or the Filoli offer a fascinating glimpse into Monterey's days of yore. If that doesn't satisfy your inner history geek, head onward to Tor House and the Cooper-Molera Adobe.

A structure that has linked Monterey for what feels like forever, Bixby Bridge is a key part of the city's heritage that no visitor should overlook.

Travellers interested in exploring the religious heritage of the area should check out Carmel Mission Basilica and St Mary's by the Sea. You can get an even deeper insight into the city's beliefs at Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo and New Camaldoli Hermitage.

It's far better to reflect on your life and say, "Can you believe I did that?," rather than, "I wish I had done that." So, while you're in Monterey you shouldn't miss the chance to discover some of the less well-known sights, such as the Henry Miller Memorial Library and the Cherry Centre for the Arts. Partington Cove and the Big Sur Discovery Centre are some other choices.
