Arrived at dusk. Wasn't sure where to check in, but saw people in the restaurant and asked where to check in. I can't recall what the lady said, but it was something like "not here, you don't have a reservation". That wasn't exactly what she said. I said I had a reservation - she said she had checked everyone in for the night and she was about to leave. I said I had one, and tried to pull it up on my phone, but didn't have cell service, so asked if they had wifi. "We do for guests" she said, insinuating that I was not one. So, while I tried to pull up my info, she asked my name, spent a little time on her system and found my reservation. With a half-hearted apology, she said she was lucky I caught her before she left and got us checked in. It wasn't the warmest welcome, but the room was fine. Not fancy. Not overly clean. But it was generally comfortable. Mini-fridge worked. We got in after dark, but it's such a cool location nestled into the cliffs overlooking the river. We explored a bit the next morning before hitting the road and took the dog down by the river to sniff around. We kind of wish we had more time to look around and enjoy the area. We had dinner at the Swinging Steak (or whatever they call it now), the only place still open that night, and it had a cool atmosphere, but unless you want an expensive steak with mediocre sides, I would skip it. You can get a meatless hamburger without a bun? No chicken sandwich? No burger and fries (on a bun)?

There are limited places to stay in Mexican Hat but this one was adequate for our needs for a one night stay. Staff were nice and friendly on check in. Room was a reasonable size and nice and clean but the bed was a bit on the small size although it was comfortable. Rooms overlooked the river and there were places to sit out there if you so wished. Restaurant is good but some of the booth seating could definitely do with replacing as worn out.

Pictures don't do the scenery justice

The scenery is BEAUTIFUL. My colleague locked herself out of her room after hours. She was back in her room within 5 minutes. Local, friendly staff. The rooms aren't spectacular but you're literally in the middle of nowhere so it felt like a 5 star. Would book again.

The San Juan Inn is amazing and wonderful!! It's on the banks of the San Juan river with access to walk around. The rooms have seating overlooking the river, and there are many places to sit and enjoy the settings. This was truly the highlight of Monument Valley for me. I loved walking along the river. The attached restaurant is delicious. Julie and her staff are fantastic! After a reinvigorating dinner with pork chili, I wandered along the river and enjoyed my balcony seat, eventually resting in a very cozy metal rocking chair on the property. I could have just fallen asleep there. So lovely, and so free of bugs!! The wifi was good and the water was hot. Everything worked and was very comfortable. I've tried several routes for my trip back home to try to book another night at the San Juan Inn, it's truly wonderful.

So much to like here!

Everyone here was super friendly and approachable. Mostly native Navajo. Scenic location by the cliff lined river. Authentic Navajo offerings at the on-site restaurant. Great rates at hotel and good prices at the restaurant.
