The toilet was flooding and the cistern running continuously. The air conditioning was incredibly noisy. The light fittings were bizarre and unmatched. The central light on the fan had a hidden switch: I had to ring reception to find it. The carpet was old and ugly. The mattress sagged. The sheets were not tucked in properly. The pillows were old and all soft. The large black and white photo near the bathroom is an a front to any woman, and totally unwelcoming.

Two gentlemen at the desk were particularly helpful and pleasant--sorry that I don't remember their names! However the first one checked me in on Saturday afternoon around 1pm and selected a great upgraded room near the front of the building, based on my request. The second gentleman was on duty very early Sunday morning and was very helpful, when I asked for some information.

Stayed at Barnes California in a basic room. The carpet could do with a thorough hoover, especially around the corners. The décor felt dark and dingy and would benefit from modernisation. The shower took a long time to warm up and never got properly hot. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The continental breakfast was very basic and disappointing compared to others we’ve had. The bed was clean and comfy and the TV had some good channels.

Second floor Room on O’Farrel street side was noise all through the night. Idiots yelling, cars honking, buses, cable cars, garbage trucks, dumpsters slamming. Zero sleep! Do not let them put you on a low floor on the O’Farrel side.

We could not get in our room the first night. Our key did not work and none of the staff could get in as well. They put us in a different room that night without any of our stuff. They called us an hour and a half later and said the got in and we could now go to our room. It was at 12:30 at night. It was a nightmare. They did not offer us a free night or anything. Free breakfast nothing. The manager did not call to apologize

Excellent location, The hotel is very nice. Our room was nice and clean. The beds are super comfortable. And the trolly is right there. My only complaints are that they don’t have a parking structure for the hotel so that is a little hike and shower water never really got hot hot. But with all that said I would stay there again.

Location is superb if you want to be in the centre of action, next to Macy’s. Hotel is refurbished in an old building with a lot of character. I particularly like the showerhead which is detachable and the clever designs to maximise the space of the room.
