First impressions of the hotel were really good. The staff in the restaurant who handled the check-in were very friendly, and on walking into the room, it looked really nice. However, during our stay we found it to be a lot of style over substance with a real lack of attention to detail. For example, the rooms have Smeg kettles and tea and coffee is provided, but there are no teaspoons, milk or sugar. I appreciate that it is an old building, but it has clearly been refurbished, so why are there so few sockets and why are they in such inconvenient locations? Why were the lamps not working on arrival? We did work out that some of the bedside lamps could be charged using a phone charger, but we also had a plug-in bedside lamp which did not work and a dead bulb in one of the ceiling lights. One room, despite being quite spacious, had no chair. The only place to sit was on the bed. In one of the rooms, the hairdryer was falling apart. Why, during the online check-in procedure, was I asked for a credit card number for extras when there are no extras on offer? If we had eaten in the restaurant, we would have paid our bill in the same way as every other customer. There was also a stale smell in the rooms, and especially on the stairs.
It wouldn't take much to change my opinion of this hotel, but the lack of attention to detail really let it down.
