Of the best features of Barcelona is that the native traditions stand out. The Sardana is a traditional dance of Catalonia, the province of this capital city. During the mid-20th century, the dance became a symbol of Catalonian unity and defiance of the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco. The Sardana is danced in front of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia each Sunday. Other traditions include the La Mercè festival, in honour of Barcelona's patron saint, where human towers up to nine people high are erected.
