The Italian capital is a city like no other. Those stepping off of flights to Rome will discover a world of romance and ruins, designer flair and religious awe. Its ancient monuments are thrilling, its streetlife frenetic and its culture intoxicating. You can be hushed into contemplation by a sublime masterpiece, load up on designer chic at a high-end boutique, or just sip the caffe doppio, while Rome’s street theatre rolls by. Rome is a fabulous canvas. But it’s down to you to add your own unique colours.
When it comes to the ‘when’ in “When in Rome...”, it seems that everyone has summer in mind. June through to August is when the Eternal City at its most popular – and at its hottest. Soaring temperatures and crowded streets can make summer in this city a little uncomfortable. Things both cool and calm down in early spring or late autumn. Those are the months when cheap flights to Rome are most easily found. If you can wait until 2 months before you go to book flights to Rome, expect even better flight prices.
You might guess that all flights lead to Rome these days. And you’d be right. Though it’s best to start your return flights to Rome from Dublin. Both Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly from the capital’s airport direct to Rome; the former to Fuimicino (FCO), the latter to Ciampino (CIA). These will see you landing in Rome after just three hours’ flight-time. You can also get planes to Rome from Cork, courtesy of Aer Lingus, KLM and British Airways. You’ll need to change flights and that’ll add to your journey time, but the option is there if you're looking for some really cheap tickets to Rome.
Rome’s main international airport, Fiumicino, has good connections to the capital. Fastest, at half an hour, is the Leonardo Express train. It costs only €14, too. A taxi into the centre can be just as quick, with the bonus of door-to-door service. The drawback of Rome’s white taxis is the price, fixed at €50. The Terravision bus service is refreshingly cheap, at €4 to €6, but ambles along for an hour. Ciampino, Rome’s other airport, may be closer but its public transport options are fewer and a taxi may be best from here.
It’s hard to top Rome’s long-as-your-arm list of attractions: ruined splendour at the Colosseum or the Pantheon; inspiration at the Vatican or the Sistine Chapel; artistic dazzle from masters like Caravaggio, Michelangelo or Raphael all over the city. Just remember to take time out from the sight-slogging. Cool yourself at the Trevi Fountain. Scare yourself down in the Catacombe di San Sebastiano. Or twirl every last smudge of sauce off your pasta dish in a traditional bistro. After all, life’s supposed to be sweet in the capital of la dolce vita .
