The most aggressively 2 star hotel review.
I arrived at around 4pm, and was greeted by someone who clearly didn’t want to be there but fine, no problem, we all hate our jobs.
Upon entering the room the first thing that hit you was the smell. Incredibly musty and just a little gross.
It was also stiflingly hot so I opened the window, only to realise that the curtains weren’t long enough and left a gap for the outside world to peer in so lacked privacy. I had to make a barricade out of towels to stop light from the street lights right outside and to block the view.
The water from the taps was not drinkable, had a “non-potable” sticker next to it, a little insane to not have drinking water in a hotel room in 2025.
The bed was pretty comfy, although there was some mysterious pubic-looking hairs on the duvet which was a little disconcerting so I didn’t feel hugely comfortable.
The ONLY good thing about this hotel was that it was close to Paddington.

Room was a shoebox!
No Air conditioning, room was so hot all night!!!!
Table fan was your air conditioning!
Hand held shower in the bathroom!
I was in a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor... like floor 2 plus! Had to negotiate luggage through doors and up 3 flights of stairs!!!
6) No lift or elevator!
Awful shoebox of a room...never, never ever again! Thank you!
It’s in a good safe area and the staff was friendly and the hotel felt safe. But the rooms definitely needed an update. They clean the rooms every day, but the corners and walls were all quite dirty from years of overuse. The breakfast was very good. The rooms are crazy small. But I think that’s what you get in London.

Very noisy. Tubes run below building and whole room shook every few minutes. Our room was tiny. Two single beds with barely enough room to stand between them. Suitcases had to go under our beds. Shower room was up a deep step in the corner and rather smelly from drains. Only 1 seat - no room for a second. Whole hotel was very tired. Beds, despite being very narrow were comfortable though. Easy access to Paddington station.
Location within easy walking distance of Paddington Station (Heatrow Express terminus) was a big sell for me. It's also a nice, virant neighbourhood with a small park across the street.
Breakfast buffet included with my room was also good.
Affordable hotel in good location. Clean and well cared for. No elevator, extra small bathroom and tube runs underneath.

Three stars? I think not.
I’m surprised that the Shakespeare Hotel has a three-star rating. I was on the top (4th) floor. The stairs up from the second floor were dangerous - narrow, steep, shallow, and with lousy handrails on one set and no handrails on the other two.
My room was clean but tiny. The bathroom could not have been smaller and, though there was hot water, the water pressure was very low, barely enough to take a shower in the tiny, slippery shower stall. And the faucet water wasn’t potable.
Breakfast (in the basement) was inadequate. I tried to get a cup of black coffee from the hot-beverage machine; the closest it could come was a watery cappuccino. The scrambled eggs weren’t quite scrambled and the cereal selection was poor. Except for the man that checked me in, the staff was friendly.
Don’t recommend having heavy luggage when staying here. There are many narrow staircases that are very difficult to carry heavy luggage up. The shower glass doors leaked water all over the floor so you have to turn the water off intermittently while showering so it doesn’t overflow and get all over the floor.

…and the train comes a rumbling through.
Every few mins. a train passes under or near the building and it rumbles like the building is falling apart. And a sign in the room advises you to not drink the water. Never have I booked a room with non-potable water.

Staff were extremely friendly. The biggest breakfast was great value and really well stocked even when we arrived towards the end of service.
Our only complaint would be the shower which had a broken height adjuster meaning that the rose always sat at the bottom of the slide which was about chest height making a less than easy shower

Basic but ok for price
It was ok for the price paid. The room was basic, but was fine for sleeping, as expected with a hotel like this you hear plenty of noise from above and the landings.
Close to transport & walkable to famous attractions. Room was small, I requested a room on ground level which I was given. Just had to get used to rumbling of trains underground.
