Beautiful building and setting but the service was appalling at every turn. We waited 30 minutes for the receptionist to turn up and check us in. We ordered a bottle of wine from room service, waited 20 mins for it to arrive only to find they’d brought no corkscrew ….waited a further 20 mins only to discover they still didn’t bring a corkscrew so we sent the wine back as we had to leave to go to a wedding. They ran out of wine in the bar the previous evening ……. Rooms quite basic for the money, half of what they said was included such as bottled water, tea bags, hot chocolate, milk etc was missing from the minibar and when we tried to call reception to get some brought to the room it took them 40 minutes to answer the phone and then another 30 minutes to bring anything to the room. Would not recommend this hotel purely on the basis of truly terrible service

tired and needs some tlc. My bath towels had holes in them ! Also food prices unjustifiably high. The experience you have depends on the room you stay in. I stayed in room 18 which was tiny and a bad experience. Way too hot and I had a bad sleep as a result. 2 nights later I stayed in room 81 which was excellent. Breakfast not that great and certainly not worth the money, nowhere near. I won't stay again as I had to go out for dinner and wouldn't pay for that breakfast again so staying again is a bit pointless

This room (81) was much nicer than other rooms I have stayed in. More space and more comfortable.

Lovely setting but service not great

We only stayed for one night as we had a wedding at a nearby hotel. The hotel is set on beautiful grounds and i'm sure if want a picturesque setting then the hotel is ideal. The issue we had was with the service. Needless to say we were a bit tender the morning after the wedding, however. Room service from 9am-11am tried to get into our room 4 times. We told them on each occasion we were checking out at 11 and they could clean the room then. Still they continued to knock and try to get into the room. Finally, we were waiting for a lift so thought we'd get a coffee while waiting. After waiting 10 mins to get served (there was no-one else waiting), the coffee finally arrived 15 minutes later as our lift arrived. Obviously we didn't pay but it was annoying. We'd like to think our experience was a one-off as it seemed such a nice hotel.

Wonderful

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in August, and it was the highlight of our weeks tour of Shropshire. The hotel is a lovely old building in beautiful grounds, very quiet and peaceful. Staff are brilliant, nothing was too much trouble. We had booked our spa treatments well in advance, so had no problems getting what we wanted and when. The treatments were stunning - I had never had this type of treatment before, and it was amazing! we ate in the restaurant one evening, and while it was not cheap, it was excellent quality. A bit short on vegetarian options, but staff assured us they would sort something different out if we wanted to eat there again. Breakfast was great too, with lots of choice. We will definitely be returning.

a little breather

Working from home is ideal but sometimes you don't properly 'switch off' unless you 'get away'. 24 hours is all we wanted and its a pleasant, easy trip by car from the big city birmingham to Shropshire. Hotel easy to find just north of Shrewsbury, we wondered whether we'd missed a nought off the room price; very good looking house and pleasant gardens - all to be explored again, sometime. Staff on reception efficient and extremely welcoming, overcoming a hiccup with my credit card without an eyelid batted. Weddings seemed to be popular at least 2 parties arriving or leaving - al the receptionists were kind, enthusiastic and unfazed with everyone we saw. Our room was in the SchoolMasters house; comfortably converted from 20th century school I assume. Large spacious bathroom, good bed and chairs. Can never quite get the best form the TV - it promised music from my phone would play - but no. never mind. We didnt want the spa treatments but took advantage of the pool and thermal rooms ...wonderful way to spend early friday evening. a few kids, a few adults all calm, warm, clean and stylish. very relaxing. Dinner- great food, I was surprised by the quality, feared it might be rather anonymous and not so expensive ether. Friendly -but not overfriendly -staff Again! Intended to rise early and swim again, but felt too relaxed . Really was just what we needed, and the staff were exceptionally good - always attentive but not creepy or over weening. Can imagine a great place for weddings and receptions and we, at least, did not have our tranquility disturbed one bit . If we can afford it again, I definitely try for more than just one night.
