Chose because it looked alright, was central and did breakfast. Three days before the booking received an email to say no longer doing breakfast. Offered free cancellation but by then everywhere was booked as bank holiday. So decided to stay and there were places around and I found a good location which did breakfasts.
The Lion is very tired with worn carpets, poor lighting and my single room which could have been from the 70s. There are traces of its former grandeur, a wooden but empty bar, a conference room with great decor but stored furnishings and an empty restaurant next door. The staff were professional but looked very glum - not surprising perhaps as their catering colleagues had been let go that week. The owner I understand lives abroad which might hint at the challenges this place faces.
It was clean, the bed was comfortable and it was serviced between nights and properly. But it could be so much more in a town which is a great place to visit and has one imagines a need for accommodation!
