Good hotel, great staff

Pros: Location, staff and comfort.

The staff at this hotel are possibly the most polite, smartest and well trained that I have ever come across. This was true without exception. Well done to whoever runs this hotel.

Good sized room with a decent view.

The hotel is well placed for a break in Buxton, with the town (and its restaurants) and the station no more than a ten minute walk away. Our bedroom was on the second floor, accessible by stairs or the lift. It was an unusual shape, but quite roomy. The bathroom wasn't overly spacious but big enough, the bed was a very good size (and comforable) and there were two comfortable chairs with a coffee table, along with a desk and a further chair. The view overlooked the local cricket pitch, and crown bowling green. We didn't eat in the restaurant on any of the evenings, but did have breakfast every morning, and had a drink in the bar one evening. We were slightly disappointed with the continental breakfast, as the range was fairly limited compared to what we've had on the continent. Similarly with the bar, with the cask ale being one that I had never heard off. The bar itself seemed a tad tired, and didn't encourage you to stay. But these were more than offset by the quality of the room.

Dated and basic, needs a refurb

The best points of the hotel were the location and the service from the reception team. Frequent travellers we were disappointed with the room, very basic and very 80/90's in style. Bed was uncomfortable, no fridge or mini bar. There was a wedding on and this meant the bar staff were nowhere to be seen in the residents bar, poor show! They offered to make amends the next day by changing the room, we declined and left a day early, still having paid for the full duration! Ordinarily I would have asked for a refund but decided I will approach the main chain to do this. Poor value for money, and ruined what should have been a romantic getaway. Will not be returning.
