Good but in need of refresh

Good-the castle and grounds itself, the comfortable bed and pillows. Lovely clean bedlinen and towels. Housekeeping inconsistent - towel change every day was good but only 2 days out of 4 we got biscuits replenished and 2 days out of 4 the bed was made. Toilet rolls and sanitary bags not replenished. Room was adequate size and had all you need for our 4 night stay but desperately in need of a repaint. Dirty finger marks on bathroom door never wiped down, it could look so much better. Restaurant food of good standard but 2 days out of 4 they got the breakfast order wrong. All in all would still recommend but they could do better

Wonderful location and setting

Wonderful location and setting. The hotel leans into it's historic location. Beautiful flowers adorning the building make it even more impressive. Very comfortable rooms, excellent breakfasts and friendly staff. Very accessible for activities in the area.

Do NOT book a weekend night here - They have a new Tipi tent in which they have live music and discos, which is located 3 meters from the guest bedrooms. The noise is very loud and you'll not be able to relax in your room until after the bands have finished. Forget opening a window to cool the room (no air con - none expected of a castle!) No warning that this was a new 'feature', was expecting the normal relaxing evenings that we have grown to like and enjoy.

Our first time in an olde English castle. It was a real treat. We had a castle feature room with a large and very comfortable bed. The feature was a bathroom in the wardobe ( I kid ye not ) It was very clean and tidy. The floorboards creaked a bit but this is a castle built in 14C so we can excuse that. There was a heat wave when we arrived and the dark cool interior was very welcome. The library bar is cozy with very attentive staff. The Knight's restaurant was much bigger and the food was very well presented and tasty. Again, the staff were attentive without being overbearing. We got a nice wedding anniversary presentation after dessert which was a good touch. Breakfast was in the Knight's restaurant. The breakfast fixed menu was extensive and at £25 a pop a bit expensive too. However, a lot to choose from - you won't leave hungry and that's a fact! Again, very attentive staff. A couple of gripes, they are minor but nevertheless we couldn't understand it. 1st night we got a complimentary bottle of water each but no more after that. £2.50 for a cappaccino on top of a breakfast fixed price of £25 seemed a bit mean to me.Could do with a couple of hooks in the bathroom for removed clothes, hang the bathrobe while showering etc. These are all very minor points and didn't detract from the experience of staying in a real castle, with grand decor and a grand history, attentive and friendly staff, great grub too. Expensive but you get good bang for your buck.

A lovely hotel with a few surprises. The grounds were magnificent. We had a castle room which from a historical point of view was wonderful. The wardrobe was a bonus!

Beautiful castle 10mins away from Durham

Stayed here whilst visiting Durham with my son. A really lovely hotel. Genuine castle. Really well kept.

Unique as it was a castle, narrow passages and difficult at times to navigate your way around. Lift only goes to the first floor. There are lots of stairs if your room is on the top floor. It’s not for the more mature people if they are not fit. Bar area very well organized with excellent staff. Bedroom 56 very odd , shower and bath on a raised area in the corner of the bedroom! . Bar food ok but main restaurant limited choice, my lamb was very tasty but my wife had duck which she was unable to eat . The waitress did offer to take it back , Overall I would only give it 3 1/2 stars
