Great if you like noise & disruption of an evening

Pros: Central in the Town
Cons: Just about everything. Repair paint peeling from ceiling, clean dirty marks from walls, doors and gloss painted fixings etc etc
Location: The Abbey The Athelstan Museum
We arrived on the Friday and taken our room which was at the front above the bar. We was then told there would be some music that evening from a one man karaoke style act in the bar that evening. As we had a long full schedule the next day we really wanted an early evening and asked if another room was available. We were shown two other rooms, one was at the rear but above where people smoked and was dingy and had no other window apart from the window above the smoking area and the other was again at the front and much smaller (considering we had booked a large room). So we decided to take the first room we were shown - WHAT A NIGHTMARE ! We was staying at the Kings Arms over the May bank holiday weekend (Friday - Monday), so we started with the loud karaoke until after 11pm on the Friday and then on Saturday the constant bar door slamming with people going in and out the bar. We asked if the door could be hooked open as it was a hot day but our pleas fell on deaf ears. So we had this until late in the evening. Then, on the Sunday evening when we were really tired we had the "pièce de résistance" the Hotel could offer with Fire Alarms, Evacuation from our rooms and Fire-fighters from the Fire Brigade going through all our rooms only to discover this was a 'FALSE ALARM'. This all at 9.30pm - 10.30pm in the evening. After the Fire Engine left towards 11pm we opened our window to air the room only to hear and witness a drunken fight in the street directly outside. Poor staffing.

Convenient location, good value

Pros: Location, value, hearty breakfast!
Cons: Decor and furniture in rooms and communal areas was quite tired and needs some updating.
Location: Had a nice stroll round the town and the abbey but was visiting friends so sightseeing wasn't really the purpose of my trip.
We were going to a friend's birthday party nearby and just needed something reasonably priced for an overnighter. I think the hotel is going through a few changes at the moment so I hope it will emerge a little smarter than it is at the moment. They seemed low on staff, but the ones they had were really helpful and courteous. Room was clean and comfortable but like a lot of the hotel, the decor was a little tired and could do with some TLC. Nothing bad to say and the price for 2 of us including breakfast was great - happy that we got what we paid for and would stay there again.
