Lovely old traditional inn in an excellent (though quiet) location for exploring Winchester on foot. The pub is packed full of pictures and other stuff hanging on the walls which are unsurprisingly a bit grubby! The pub ambience is however cosy and welcoming with a log fire burning pleasantly. Our check in was friendly and efficient but no words of welcome were uttered and I had to wait while the staff member finished his telephone conversation. He just waved the handset at me without making eye contact. The room (Nelson) was traditionally furnished, large with a comfortable bed and enough storage for our weekend stay. Unfortunately there was a smell of woodsmoke from the pub downstairs but we got used to it! No noise though other than a buzz of conversation until closing time..A suitcase stand would have been a useful addition. It was well heated and double glazed. The bathroom was well appointed and both rooms were spotlessly clean. Breakfast buffet was OK. Other things were cooked freshly and were very good.
