A wonderful regal hotel steeped in history. Clean, warm and very helpful friendly staff.
A very relaxing atmosphere in the evening whilst employing the use of the bar.
The history of the hotel makes it very unique which is why we have given the hotel an excellent rating.
There are though several areas which we feel the hotel could do better.
1) We had the Christmas menu but was very disappointed with the man course of roast turkey.
It was excessively salty and the Brussel sprouts were strong in taste and rubbery. For £36.50 it was a poor meal which we fed back in the restaurant.
2) The executive club suite backed onto a road with traffic disturbing us in the early hours of the morning
3) We asked for a double bed but it effectively felt like two singles joined together
4) It was pouring with rain when we handed in our key at reception. On our return, I said it would be nice to have complimentary umbrellas. The receptionist said they have them but wasn’t thoughtful enough to say it on our way out.
5) we booked through Expedia on fixed nights. Due to events outside of our control we had to pull the booking forward by one night. In spite of several requests, the hotel would not find a solution of selling the room on and giving us even a partial refund
It was a unique experience to stay there to see all of the military history but because of the above, we will not stay there again
Excellent location! Staff were friendly. Breakfast options did not change, yet were good. Request a room in the main building rather than the annex…4 stars on some aspects rather than 5 due to staying in a small basement room in the annex- that needs to be defined more in the advertisement.
Would stay the same way again though- due to price AND location!
Close to everything, the breakfast was great, the place is an old like gentlemen’s club or something. It’s really cool on the inside. The plaid carpet made it feel so Scottish I loved everything about it.
Cool place. Plenty of room. Nice restaurant. Pleasant helpful staff. Lots to do in walking distance. One of the nicest places for the money that we have stayed in the UK.

Liked: Cleanliness, amenities
We were surprised to learn our room was in an annex to the hotel and required a walk down spiral concrete staircase to a basement with an outside entrance. We upgraded to a more expensive room in the hotel.
The room was very good - up to date, clean, good location, and nice accommodations. The walls are thin and we heard our neighboring rooms going in and out - slamming doors from 9pm to 4 am... disrupted a lot of sleep.
