In desperate need of an update.

Amazing location for the beach and harbourside. BUT hotel extremely tired and dated in its decor. Toilets in reception/ bar area particularly awful. Wouldnt go back as feel the 4 star is not appropriate. The rooms are also not all sound proofed. I left my partner and daughter splashing around in the bath and could hear every word all the way down the corridor and by the lift. Also really disappointed that we wernt allowed to take an alcoholic drink next to the poolside on a beautiful weekend of weather.

Despite telling the server that I could not have a certain food and that being noted on my order, my food appeared WITH that item. Very unhappy about that! Our room was tiny and not serviced until after 4pm each day which was inconvenient. The pool looks dirty as the floor of it needs painting. For the comfort and relaxation of the majority, smoking and vaping shouldn't be allowed poolside. Also there were 3 young women playing heavy beat music really loudly poolside. I was trying to listen to an audio book with headphones and on full volume and I could still hear it - and I am partially deaf!! The staff did nothing about this. Other guests were irritated as were we and left the area earlier than planned. Being British we all said nothing to them. This was our third or forth visit, the reception area, conservatory and patio areas have a nice atmosphere. The staff are friendly, breakfast is the usual buffet style if not included in your room rate book it the day before for £12 each otherwise on the day its £15. You can park at the rugby club - tell reception and they will add it to your bill £9.30 for 24 hours.

Lovely hotel. Delicious food. Great friendly staff especially the supervisor who works in the bar area she was so friendly and had a lovely smile. Also too the very kind and hard working male waiter who also worked in the bar area such a hard working kind person. And to all the other staff such a lovely bunch of people

The staff were fine but the hotel itself was a real letdown. The changing rooms for the swimming pool are a disgrace. The rooms are so dated I don't think they have been touched since the hotel was built over 100 years ago ! The hotel location is good. I can only say that I would rather have stayed in a Premier Inn or even a Travelodge as both are better than the Grand in the room department. At least they don't have holes in the bedsheets and curtains and a fraction of the price.

Had a really lovely stay at the hotel, with reception being great and an upgraded room. Loved the breakfast and dinner and the view in the Compass Bar was great. Would definitely stay again. It’s not pristine and perfect everywhere but we found in had faded charm and a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Faulty towers tribute Hotel experience.

The room looked great, however the bed was too springy and soft, felt like it had been used for jumping on on sank in the middle, we had 2 days of cold showers, as the shower thermostat valve was broken and just spun, made reception aware and said they would send an engineer, nobody came, reported again on leaving. The last thing you want after a 4 hour drive, is a cold shower and a soft uncomfortable bed, but to top it off you could hear the people from the next room, as the adjoining door is not soundproof, and then when eventually did fall asleep, was woken at 7am on bank holiday Monday by a dog barking loudly in one of the rooms close by. Didn’t get much better at breakfast, table had no cutlery, my daughter asked for scrambled egg, came out when we had finished our breakfast, there were no cereal bowls, asked the waiter, he replied what type of cereal bars? Went to get a plate instead, it was hot, but still wet and with bits of food, where not washed properly. This hotel looks nice in the photos, in reality parts are tired and needs a refurb, the restaurant staff at breakfast need better training and poor for a 4 star hotel,

A little tired perhaps, but still lovely!

This is a beautiful hotel with wonderful staff. Sure, the building itself is looking a little tired, but it has some stunning features in the public areas. Every member of staff is so friendly and helpful. Breakfast has plenty of choice, and the evening meals we had were superb. Our room had a fridge and a safe. As a woman, I also appreciated the magnifying mirror in the bathroom.

Not so Grand

Not so Grand... When booking I asked for two things - a parking place and a quiet room. I got the parking place. Our room was three paces from a noisy lift. Our room had a connecting door (closed and locked) which meant we heard every word from next door, all through the night. Hotel staff wouldn't or couldn't offer us any help. The offer to change rooms was only given late in the day when we were about to go out on our last night. Too late.

Being coming to the grand hotel for many years the majority of staff were excellent friendly and helpful but I did find the reception staff un helpfull and rude I did find parts of the hotel very tired and need of a uplift
