Disliked: Cleanliness

Unloved and needs a complete refurbish.

Very shabby hotel. Exterior, grounds and furniture all in disrepair and the pool was closed -no mention of this on the website when booking. Restaurant walls.skirting boards and window frames were filthy. Bedroom furniture is ancient, shabby and marked but the room itself was spotless considering what the housekeeping team have to work with. Breakfast good. All staff really good apart from the head waitress on the Thursday morning who was very blunt, unacommodating and not pleasant with other staff. Amazing views but this doesn’t warrant the price.

Disappointing

Delux room with balcony which was overlooked by diners in the dining room and above the noisy pool pump equipment. Beautiful view, very tired decor and generally not worth the money.

It’s a lovely old hotel with some real charm. The staff were very good, the room lovely and breakfast very good. One gripe, the bar isn’t anywhere near big enough for the potential customers. Running out of lemonade and getting gin in a half pint glass because they didn’t have any gin glasses isn’t really on but the young girls working it were under the cosh. The other, after seasoning my breakfast with ‘pepper’ only to find it was salt I was told by the waiter, quite confidently that the multi-holed cellar was for salt and the single holed, pepper. Well it got me googling! We’ll be back for sure, it’s a lovely hotel and great value at the price, breakfast a bargain. The indoor pool is very good sadly the outdoor was closed. Staff all very friendly.

The staff is not responsive at all. Before we arrived for 2 days I was desperately trying to contact the hotel about confirming the pet-friendly room. They never responded to me: neither by message on Expedia, nor by email, not by phone (I called them but they didn't help) As a result of course they made me pay additionally for changing the room to a pet-friendly one when we arrived. We paid £165 additionally for 3 days: for parking, dog and changing the room. It reminds me of the low-coster airlines where you pay not much initially but you have to pay additionally for every feature. They also always have just 1 person at the reception desk. And this is for such a large hotel. I know that queues are a part of British culture but it's quite annoying that you always have to wait in the long queue at the reception just because the second desk is always empty. It's definitely not a 4*. Quite tired, not very comfortable, if your windows are the same side as the main entrance, be prepared you will never sleep at night because of very loud jingle of the flags over the entrance. No slippers, no bathrobes as well which is quite uncomfortable given they have a pool in the hotel.

In honesty there was nothing outstandingly good or bad, but in general the hotel décor and furnishing is rather tired and in bad need of a revamp. The room was large, had a good view of the bay, but generally poor. Internal doors didn't catch or lock, including the bathroom, shower leaked onto floor through screen, but water pressure very good and lots of very hot water. The basics for a good hotel are there, but no attention to detail, and management failure for not checking these things. I blame poor management, not the staff, who were very helpful. To give one small example: only one receptionist on duty, even though there were two reception stations, so long queues built up to check in/out or ask for anything. This lead to some guests being rude to the receptionist for no fault of her own. I saw her visibly upset. There should be no need for this. Despite the shortcomings my stay was pleasant enough.

An excellent stay in a proper old-fashioned hotel.

Just a one night stay after a stressful work period: check-in was quick and helpful, the room, on the Garden level was large, clean and comfortable, with a balcony on which were a couple of sun-loungers. A really nice bathroom, a great television, robes, slippers, tea & coffee, ironing board and iron. I ate in the Club lounge, with a perfect sea view, good services, excellent Chardonnay and acceptable fish & chips. (cheaper than our local chip-shop here in London) Breakfast was also great: a huge choice from the cold buffet and also from the Full English section. Coffee was good, juice was excellent, pastries full-sized, as opposed to the miniature ones that too many hotels serve these days. The only let-down was the scrambled egg, but I find that's pretty much the norm in any hotel restaurant that has scrambled egg as part of a serve-yourself buffet: it's either an impenetrable lump, or a watery mess, that latter in this case. Aside from that, a relaxing stay in a slightly faded, but still grand in attitude, hotel.

Staff are friendly and helpful enough, plenty of space over the whole hotel so it doesn't feel crowded even at breakfast or dinner. Bed was very comfortable even though i have a prolapsed disc. Basic Double room was pretty good but not perfect. Room could do with a mini fridge also. I didn't like the extra charges that are incurred that weren't made clear until arrival(parking fees,e.t.c.), Why not just factor them into the cost of the stay? No one likes surprise costs. Overall Happy with my stay :)

The location was fantastic right next to the sea and very quiet. The room was big, clean but the furniture was dated & tired. We booked a sea view room with a balcony and the view was amazing. The staff were friendly & helpful. The exterior of the poperty needs alot of attention. The pool was closed & looked like it had been for a while. Breakfast was the usual buffet nice & hot. The breakfast view was fantastic. We didn't use the spa.

Comfy but a little disappointing

Whilst the Hotel was big and a great location, it is extremely tired and dated. We were there on honeymoon, which was noted on our booking, however not even a cursory congratulations on arrival by the Reception staff. We could have chosen to spend our honeymoon wherever we wanted but chose the Imperial - if given the choice again, probably wouldn't choose this hotel to spend the most special holiday of your life. One of the hottest weeks and the outside pool was unavailable. The room was comfortable but definitely needs a redecoration.

Expensive and very poor

Room was dirty. Hotel doesnt seem to have had any maintenance for 50 years plus Out door pool was probably last open in the 70s judging by the state of it ( it’s closed by the way despite being on every advert- surely illegal ). Staff generally ok. Although had occasions or reception being rude and bar - breakfast staff and breakfast v good If you want luxury not the place to go - stay clear for the price .
